Which is better for retaining sound quality in your export; changing the gain or lowering the volume on the clip itself?

Zero difference... And, if that's what your audience is paying attention to you've got much bigger issues to worry about.

I still trying to figure out gain vs volume. What I find is that if I need to make a big increase to the final volume, it is best done by giving it a big boost in gain, and then fine tuning volume. Sometimes it just isn't possible to get all the increase I want from volume.

Also, I find it easier to control gain. I just press "g" and then enter a number with up to two digits of precision. Hell of a lot easier than working with rubber bands, or opening up volume in effects.
