Premiere Pro : Can't find "Open Caption"
on Nov 21, 2016 at 11:08:58 am

Hi community,

I'm working on Premiere Pro CC v9.3 and I would like to add some subtitles.

But when I try to insert an open captions, I can't find it in the list. (see screnshot). There is only CEA-608, CEA-708 and Teletext.

Am'I missing something please ?

Thank you in advance.

I believe that feature is new in Premier Pro 2015 (10.3)

Hi Youne,

Katie is right. Open Captions are not available in 9.3.

Here are a few links to how to use Open Captions in 2015 and newer

Hey Peter!

Do you have a link/tutorial on how to do Open Captions in Premiere Pro 15.4? The links sent above don't tell how to add captions or extend the captions clip in 2015.4 (like in 2017).

Hi Jeff,

1. To create an Open Caption go File > New Captions or select the + button in the Project Panel > Captions

2. The New Captions dialog box appears displaying the video settings. Premiere Pro matches the caption video settings to the open sequence. Accept the default video settings and click OK. In the next dialog, under 'Standard' select Open Captions from the drop down menu. Your Caption file will be added to the Project panel.

3. From the Project panel, double-click on the caption file to open the Captions panel.

4. From the Captions panel, you can extend the duration of the Caption file(s) by modifying the out point. Hover over the hot text and drag to the right.

Let me know if that was the info you were looking for Jeff.

Happy New Year!

You are using Premiere Pro?
You are using version 15.3 or later?
You are following the instructions from Peter's links above and you do not see the options for "Open Caption"?

If "yes" to all the above, then you may have some unusual problem like a corrupt software installation or something.
If "no" to any of the above then you may wish to provide us more detail about your
operating system,
software version and
project details.

Another option is to do your open captions outside of premiere. I suggest that because the captioning in Premiere is clunky and has limited options.

Amara.org is a great free resource to create closed and open captions. You can make them on the site and then export a .srt file and import that file into a program like Submerge and marry the captions to your video.

I did follow the step given above again and restart my device. Now it's alright. Thanks a lot.
