Exporting segments from timeline to Media Encoder
on Oct 12, 2011 at 9:00:06 pm

Hello...first time Premiere Pro user here. I'm on CS5.5.

I would like to export segments from the timeline directly into Media Encoder. Meaning, mark an in and out and then export. It appears that when I export that the entire sequence is brought into Media Encoder and then I have to mark IN and OUT there. This if very time consuming. Am I missing something? Is there a way to have the Export function recognize my In/Out marks?

Thanks

After you Export Media, select Queue, when you get to AME, then at the bottom left, there is time code and an in & out little arrow button.

Now your cursor will be sitting where it was in the sequence so if your going from zero to 3 minutes, park your cursor at the 3 min. mark, export and then just hit the out button and you'll have that in & out done.

Go back to sequence and do it again for ea. section needed.

There may be other ways, it's the way I do it.

Chris,
Thanks for the suggestion. Seems like that will work fine if the segment you'd want to export is at the beginning of the sequence. In general, it just isn't very efficient.

I did find another work-around. Lasso to select the section you want exported and then NEST that selection. I can then export the NESTed section. Still very inefficient though.

I'm really surprised the folks at Adobe haven't come up with a much more simple way to do this. I do this kind of think in Avid and Final Cut quite often. I'm also surprised that I can't easily make a subclip from and edited section in the timeline.

Anyway, thanks for the help Chris.

Well, even when you export something out of the middle, park your cursor at the beginning, click on the timecode and copy it.
Park the cursor at the end and export media.

Cursor will be sitting @ your out point, click the out button.
click on time code and paste, it will jump to you in point, click the in button.

Hi Frank,

Just above the Timeline sequence, there is a gray bar, called the "Work Area" bar - adjust the Ins and Outs of the Work Area, then in AME, choose to Export WORK AREA, rather than "Entire Sequence" or "Custom".

Jeff,
Thanks much. That seems to be a somewhat more efficient workflow. Still wish I could just mark IN and OUT and be done with it. Guess I need to find a good tutorial on basic Premiere Pro workflow and give myself a little time to get used to the software.

Put playhead at in point and hit ALT+[
put playhead at out point and hit ALT+]
File/Export/Media
Set Source Range to Work Area (bottom left)
Set the rest of the output settings
Hit Queue
AME will open
Hit Start Queue
Go back to Premiere and set new in and out points
Hit Queue
AME will already be open
Hit Start Queue
repeat for all segments.

Kevin,
Thanks for posting the blog. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I guess I need to find a nice Premiere Pro for AVID/FCP editors tutorial. Do you know if there is one out there, basically that just demonstrated the major differences in timeline navigation?

I did search the CS 5.5 Help menu for suggestions on this issue I was having with exporting segments from a timeline. Unfortunately my search query didn't give me the answer I needed. Perhaps I didn't put in the correct keywords. Anyway, glad that Creative Cow exists and the there is always someone willing to lend a helping hand.

[Frank Bokoski, Jr.] "As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I guess I need to find a nice Premiere Pro for AVID/FCP editors tutorial."

Check out, "An Editor's Guide to Adobe Premiere Pro"
http://www.amazon.com/Editors-Guide-Adobe-Premiere-ebook/dp/B0058NXWT0
Basically written by FCP guys.

BTW, thanks for mentioning a problem with Help. Since I'm in charge of Help, I'll make sure to update the custom search engine so that users can find "exporting segments" better.
