New Mac Pro - can I add additional memory to stock 32GB or swap it all out?
on May 20, 2020 at 12:02:39 am

Bit the bullet and bought a new Mac Pro 16 core. My 2009 has been bandaided to work for quite some time (3.46ghz 12 core upgraded cpu, etc.) but a 4k doc with a huge project size has finally brought it to it's knees after a year of ballooning with more and more footage. I have a kit from Amazon arriving for 128GB of memory. Should I pull the stock 32GB and have a perfectly matched set or is it ok to just add this 128GB to the stock 32GB for 160GB? Here's the Amazon memory I ordered x2 of:

Hugs.

I think the Ram has to be in pairs. If the stock is 32GB then it must be 2x16GB
Normally the Ram should match so your 33GB modules won't match the 16GB modules.
But I presume the Apple documentation will clarify.

I received two for my day job and removed the 32GB and fed them 6x16GB.
However, there is a path to mixing them up.
You have to dig deep in the Apple site.
I think I still have the emails just have to find the time.
There are 12 slots and I do recall you have to place smaller in a different order than the larger RAM.
Sorry, that's all I can recall.

Hey guys, yes Apple gives you a guide on how to add mixed pairs, it's even printed on the ram cover. I meant, I always came from the school of never mix ram size... but wasn't sure if this was an old way or thinking or still a good rule to follow. I know on the 2009 and 2010 there were weird tricks like never fill up all the slots if you want full performance etc., Wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something that would hit performance even though technically it's possible.

That's the key.
HP have white papers that detail the layouts of their HP Ram options for best performance.
Hopefully Apple has the same.
The hardware can often cope with mismatched arrangements but performance is compromised.

And before you buy the RAM, take a look at this video to learn how to buy the fastest RAM for that Mac. This is a Windows 10 tutorial but the same general process would hold for Mac as well.

The Apple document does say.

"For maximum performance, install DIMMs in a 6 or 12 DIMM configuration."
But then of course it also says you should use Apple Ram.
Increasing Apples cash mounting helps performance :-)

[Pat Horridge] "Increasing Apples cash mounting helps performance :-)"

That's the auto-fill option on all Apple documents 😉

I went with OWC RAM for ours.

I bought the 2019 Mac Pro with stock 32gb Ram ( 16x2 ). I added 64gb ( 16x4 ) and kept the original Ram so I now have 96gb and it works fine. You can mix and match in pairs to your hearts content.

Most systems will work fine with mixed ram modules. But not at the highest performance. That slight ram speed difference maybe less important than having the additional ram capacity.
But mixing modules often impacts max performance

I haven't put the 2019s to hard work to date due to all this.
Kind of hard to know if any of the options we did help.
I didn't get the AfterBurner due to its infancy.
We knew that you can buy it after so that helps.
Not a lot is being shot so no need for it for the day job.
Mind you I have no film work at home either :P
