Ideal Hardware Upgrades to run Premiere

Hey CC,

I've noticed that the edit bays at my work could use a update to have them run faster and smoother as they are starting to run a bit slower. I'm unsure if my boss would fully upgrade everything so I was hoping to find out what would be the best thing to upgrade first. CPU, RAM or Hard Drive? Our edit bays are all identical so here are the specs below.

A side note is we tend to edit using 720p/1080p Pro Res & DNX HD with occasionally MXFs, I know in a perfect world we would transcode everything down to small proxies but that's a whole other can of worms, so just assume we will be cutting using the media specs above.

HP Z420 Workstation
Windows 10
Intel (r) Xeon (r) E5-1650 v2 @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz
32GB RAM
64-bit Operating system, X64 based processor
Running Premiere 13.0.2

Internal HD is a SSD Micron Model# MTFDDAK512MBF-1AN1ZABHA-HP
MICRON 512GB MLC SATA III 2.5 INCH SMALL FORM FACTOR SFF M600 SERIES 16NM MULTI LEVEL CELL NAND FLASH 6GB/S SATA3 SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE SSD

Secondary HD (non SSD):
SEAGATE ST1000DM003 P/N: 1ER162-501 F/W: CC45 1TB TK Z4Y DESKTOP HDD

I'm interested to know your thoughts. Will upgrading one thing really help or is it more along the lines of needing to upgrade all three parts.

You don't mention what GPU (Graphics card) are in these machines. Premiere really does leverage the GPU to help things go smoother. CUDA...the "Mercury Engine." Those are the terms used when Premiere taps into the GPU to help with editing.

So yeah, what GPU do you have? And you might do good to get a better one.

[Tristan Finn] "NVIDIA Quadro K2000 "

Upgrading the GPU is almost always a no-brainer. Grabbing a GeForce GTX 1080 or similar would increase your usability and lower render times without a huge hit to the piggy bank.

Puget Systems has some great benchmark tests and recommendations that you may find helpful:

Thanks for the info Ryan!

I wasn't sure if CPU or GPU was better to upgrade first. It looks like replacing a CPU on a HP Z420 with a new one might require a motherboard replacement as well. I'll be taking up some video card options to the boss this week.

Cheers 👍
