Laptop specs for premiere?
on Jan 31, 2019 at 2:33:38 pm

Im planning on getting a dell xps 15 with the 6 core 8th gen i7, 16gb of ram, and a Gtx 1050 ti. Is this going to be fine in premiere? Also I've heard that it's not worth getting a 4k screen because your eye cant even conceive that its 4k unless the screen is 30" or more. Should I go for the 1080p or 4k screen?

I have the XPS15 9570 for portable work and it works very well.

A few recommendations, increase your RAM TO 32 gigs, swap out your wifi card and then underclock and repaste the CPU to counterbalance CPU throttling.

And yes, there's no need for a 4k laptop screen. Get the HD model and you can attach a 4k monitor through HDMI.

If I got the model with 32 GB ram i would have to downgrade to the 7th gen core i7 which is quad core.

Get the 6 core 8th gen i7 and then upgrade the RAM in the future.

I'm not very good when it comes to customizing laptops so where would I have the ram/thermal pasting done?

Any computer repair shop can do it but I'd recommend that you attempt it yourself. Use a video tutorial and a laptop tools kit. The process is very simple.

One more question: I dont think the 1080 by 1920 screen has as high of a adobeRGB rating as the 4k screen. Should I be worried about this?

In a word, no.

If you have a color critical work flow then you need a real calibrated monitor. I wouldn't rely on a laptop monitor for any serious color work. And since the XPS15 has HDMI, you can easily connect a reference monitor to it for real color monitoring.

If I had to color grade a video for a client on the go, would I be able to get by with the color accuracy of the 1080p screen?

absolutely yes but I would recommend that you calibrate the laptop monitor with a real calibration tool like a spyder or x1 pro.

New question. I have the option to get a 4k display version with the same specs as the 1080p version (except the screen) for the same price. What should I do?
