Premiere CC 2018. Playback 4K is Choppy (lag) GTX1080
on Aug 31, 2018 at 6:57:50 am

I use 4K footage from DJI Mavic Air and Sony A7III in mp4.
Have newest update for Premiere CC 2018. 1-2 weeks ago.
Hardware:Win10 64 bit. I7-8700K With 32GB memory. GPU GTX770 2GB.
In timeline when hit Space bar I have now problem. But if I drag cursor With the mouse back and forth The Picture freeze sometimes get black for 1-2 Seconds after I drop the cursor.

Yesterday I bought a New GPU. MSI Gaming X Geforce GTX 1080 8GB and hope this will help alot. But I can't see any different. Still choppy/lag With 1-2 secunds. I use also Full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8. But still choppy.
Tried to put 4k footage at C drive. This is a Samsung 970 250GB M.2 SSD.
(And I use CUDA).

What can be the problem?

I'd recommend transcoding these to DNxHR.

Thanks. Transcoding these to DNxHR. Never heard about this. Hope you can explain this for me. Or if you have a link.
Do I still use Adobe or?

Bring the files to Adobe Media Encoder and render them out with the same resolution and framerate but in DNxHR.

One more. Try convert my 1.4GB (Pal 25) mp4 file to DNxHR HQ UDH 25. The file got 10.3GB. 10 times more, but smooth. Så why can a 10 times big file og so smooth?

If you have compressed footage your computer is working hard to decode it. Especially if it's 4K. DNxHD, Cineform and Prores take more space but are easier to decode and are visually lossless.

[Arve Hansen] "What are different/best to transcoding these to DNxHR or Proxy?"

DO you want to work in high resolution? Or do the offline (low res) to cut, and then go back to the masters when done? If you convert the 4K MP4 files (recommended) to DNxHR, you'll see them increase in file size by a factor of 5 or 6...they will get BIG. Why? Because the data rate is higher, making them easier to edit...less compressed. Compressed MP4 4K takes a LOT of horsepower to decode on the fly. So if you do convert to 4K DNxHR, make sure you have a lot of hard drive space, and FAST hard drives...or playback will lag.

Or, you can do the offline proxy workflow...something you can google for the process. Highlight the clips in your project, make proxies (this will take time, so over night is good)...and then you can edit with those proxies, and editing will be easier, but you can relink back to the originals with the click of a button.

the proxies can be smaller or multiples of the resolution.

4K H264 files take a lot to decode and DJI's codec is notoriously slow in Premiere. Like Tero mentioned, transcoding is a good option. Or you can create proxies (DNxHD is a good option) so you can edit smoothly, then with a click of a button have the high-res original media back online.

Can I color correcting, Color grade and denoise on the Proxy and this will take effect when exporting?

Yes, you can edit just like normal. Renders and exports will always use the original high-res footage. If you would like to see your high-res footage in your sequence as you edit, you simply need to toggle the proxy button on and off.
