PPro 2018 CC Won't Import AVCHD on Mac
on Jun 7, 2018 at 4:47:04 pm

I came across an issue importing AVCHD into PPro 2018 on my MBP running High Sierra. Yesterday, I was able to import several AVCHD clips into a project with no issues. Today, I tried to import AVCHD clips from a different video project and PPro hangs while trying to import. I've tried to import from the project window, media browser and drag and drop them into PPro. All with the same results. I get the rainbow sit and spin cursor after a few seconds and PPro does not respond forcing me to do a force quit.

I did some searching online and here in the forums. Since other AVCHD clips imported fine yesterday I don't think this is a Dolby audio codec issue. Is there any known issues with importing large, over 10-15GB AVCHD files into PPRO?

The files I imported yesterday were 2.1GB and today they're 15-17GB.

These are dance recital videos that need to be edited and I don't have a work around. FCPX perhaps? I don't have it installed on my MBP but I will if that will get the job done.

Thanks!

15 gig might take a while to ingest.

Nah. Typically takes only a few seconds to import and about a minute to conform in the background on my system. After several seconds of "trying" to import the AVCHD file(s) PPro locks up. I can monitor the status in the Activity Monitor and Premiere goes red and says not responding and locks up after a few seconds. Every time. I have to force quit and relaunch after each attempt.

I finally got tired of screwing with it and transcoded the files to MOV in Quicktime so I can get these recitals cut and out the door. It's an Adobe issue for sure. Something to do with High Sierra I'm guessing. It's not the Dolby codec AC3 conflict so many others on Windows are dealing with. This just seems odd since everything worked great as of yesterday and nothing has been updated or deleted from the Mac OS.

Anyone??

If you are using 12.1 (newest release), that is likely your problem.

There have been multiple import issues with this release. Even Adobe moderators on their posting board admit it.
The standard work-around has been to either transcode (which you did) or re-name the file.

It is always helpful if you include version info when posting about issues.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Hi Al,

Yes, I'm using the latest version. But I can't get my head wrapped around why the same format AVCHD files imported fine the day before and yesterday all I got were lock ups during the same process with the same type files. Makes me think that file size could be an issue? 2GB vs 15GB? I've imported much larger files without issue.

You mentioned changing the file name as a potential workaround. The root AVCHD file name?

Cheers!

Hi Mike,

Using Media Browser in Premiere for import, or File > Import?

Best results are had by copying ALL folders/files from SD card to hard drive, keep it all intact, then import with Media Browser.

Most camcorders break AVCHD recordings into 4GB chunks, surprised you have such large files. The above method does properly reconnect such spanned files when you are dealing with them, seamless with no audio or video dropouts at seams.

Thanks

Hey Jeff,

Yes. I transfer all the files from the SD cards to an external RAID or external HDD. Then import into PPro via the Project panel. I also tried using the Media Browser and drag and drop. No luck. All these AVCHD files came off of two identical GH4 cameras. We have to use AVCHD for these recitals because they are two hours long, non stop. MP4 or MOV won't allow us to shoot continuously past 28 minutes. The GH4's group all the clips together into one AVCHD file. Has always worked fine in the past and with the same camera shooing AVCHD the next day. All those files imported fine as they have in the past. I'm stumped.

Mike - it's this version of PP.
I simply renamed a file, not the appendage, and it worked.
This version (12.1 and 12.1.1) is a mess. And a characteristic is that it works inconsistently. There are previous posts here that will describe the issues.

A sure bet solution is to role back to 12.0, and wait until Adobe straightens out its mess before further upgrades.
