PP extremely slow despite decent HW
on May 19, 2018 at 9:26:29 am

I've got a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 15..

- 251 GB Flash Storage
- 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7
- 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB / Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

I remember working in Premiere relatively successfully before I got a proper editing PC.. but lately it's been horribly slow and I wonder why.

It does have a dedicated GPU, Core i7 and an SSD - which should be capable enough.

I can barely playback a 1/4 res footage..

Any reason why it's so slow and how can I fix it ?

[Mike Tyler] "I can barely playback a 1/4 res footage.. "

What kind of footage are we talking about here? Format? Resolution? Frame rate? Sequence settings?

what drive is the media on? what is your media drive speed? Is your footage H264 or an edit friendly format?

A Lot of factors can contribute to slow playback.

It's a combination of FHD and 4k footage, 25 or 50fps.

Editing on the Samsung Nvram m.2 SSD - so it should be super fast.
It was working just fine until a few days back.

I didn't encode to proxies, so it's the original media from the camera - h264 I guess.

The problem is, when I add some footage from an external HDD, it starts with choppy playback, then the whole PP freezes.
Sometimes the whole PC.

I checked the system error messages..

These are the two weak aspects of your setup. If you're working with 4k media you need at least 32 gigs ram and you need a powerful GPU.

Also, transcode the 4k if it's H264.

oh, sorry... Jus realised I wrote the SSD of my editing PC (since I've got a problem with that too and a separate topic on the forum).

On the Mac, it's the default flash drive 256gb.

So do you think I'd benefit from the additional 16gb of ram ?
