Premiere Pro CC doesn't export H264 in .MOV anymore with the 12.1 update
on Apr 25, 2018 at 7:04:22 pm

I updated my premiere pro to 12.1

Now when I come to export h624 like all my clients want before the final ProRes, the only extension I can get is .mp4 and many clients' systems wouldn't let you upload .mp4 so you need to have the H264 video files in .MOV extension.

The only way I am making it work now is to export ProRes and converting to H264 with .mov in MPEG Stream.

Any idea how this could be fixed or is it permanent? No more support to H264 with .MOv in Premiere?

Thanks

Thanks. So weird that they would drop it for the "industry" when all the people requesting the .MOV H264 are high end studios, and also to upload on systems like PIX. I'll keep using MPEG Stream I guess.

.mp4 has reached a status of total ubiquity at this point so there's little need for continued support of .mov.

I hear ya. But what would it cost them or what trouble is it for Adobe to leave the support a little longer...Seems a little closed minded. I wouldn't imagine that it has any effect on any new features the software has...

Hmmm....can you render out a ProRes Quicktime? Or no? Only ProRes MXF? What does it do with ProRes? Because ProRes QT is still a deliverable to many networks. Heck, some want DNxHD QT...they still want QT.

So, with no QT support...what format are these exported as?

Wait...I read the article and see that ProRes and DNxHD are unaffected. BUT...so should H.264. It says it's dropping support for OLD LEGACY codecs, like Cinepack and Sorenson...makes no mention of H.264...which is far from a legacy codec. So that isn't it.

Shane,

It still supports H264 stand alone with .mp4 but you can't compress with H264 using the .mov wrapper anymore.

So if you want to export QT with H264 codec like before you can't anymore...
ProRes is unaffected so in this case I am exporting in ProRes then converting to .MOV QT with H264 compression.

Not a free solution but this can rewrap .mp4 to .mov losslessly.

Master to Pro Res (or DNxHD or Cineform), use the master to make h.264/.mp4 in Adobe Media Encoder, change the extension from .mp4 to .mov. It'll be our little secret.

That's what I do. I Master to ProRes then Convert to H264 with .mov wrapper and AAC audio.

If you do it your way by just changing the extension, systems like PIX will detect it and won't allow you to upload. (the prompt will say: unsupported file extension as if it was .mp4)

Thanks.

Are you sure you really have changed the extension - not only on Finder level?
