Unable to get decent quality when exporting :(
on Apr 8, 2018 at 6:48:18 am

Good morning,

I’m hoping someone can help me?

I need to provide a private link to view a feature film for some reviewers so decided to try exporting a h264 file which I could then upload. However the quality is pretty poor. I’ve tried VBR from 15 - 20 and even a CBR of 40 but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

We’ve had four private cinema screenings where we used a DCP file for three of them and a Prores 422 for another and they looked great.

Any help is much appreciated.

How can you expect a few maps to compare to hundreds for the DCP?

I trust you are scaling the H264 to sub HD frame size?
And how ate you making the H264? The encoder used has a big impact on qulaity.
Multpass VBR and 10mbps for SD frame size.
A lit more for 720p and even more for 1080P.

Sorry, I can't help because you expect an H.264 file to have the same image quality as a DCP or ProRes file.

That's like expecting a Ford Fiesta to have the same creature comforts as a Cadillac Escalade.

As others pointed out, h264 is highly compressed. Can't really compare it too much to DCP or even ProRes. But you should be able to get "decent" quality from it. One thing that would be helpful is if you could post a screen shot of your export settings, complete with your sequence settings. Otherwise it's just guesswork as to what might be happening with your h264 renders.

I've had good results using Handbrake to create 1080p h.264 mp4 files. I use two-pass VBR encoding with an average bit rate of 20,000kbps. Handbrake uses the x264 encoder, which is considered one of the very best encoders for h.264 files.
