Poor audio capture from old VHS

Very new to this, but I've got my hands on a Panasonic AG-1970 and I'm attempting to capture some old VHS tapes (1980s) to my computer via an Intensity Shuttle (USB 3.0). I'm capturing only audio at this point as I'm having problems with the quality. I've tried a few different tapes and I'm getting the same noise as heard in this sample:

12012_untitled1.mp3.zip

This occurs even when capturing from a different cheap VCR though when I play the tapes through my receiver on the TV the audio is fine.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Windows 8.1
Intel i7-2600 3.40GHz
GeForce GTX 980

Does this happen if you're capturing audio from another source (not VCR)?
If playing the tapes through your receiver on the TV sounds OK, try capturing from the receiver or the TV audio output and see if it works.

If you don't hear the noise when listening to "live" output from VCR, then it stands to reason that the audio output from the VCR is fine then, and the noise is being introduced later at the capture stage (it does sound like digital noise to me).

Do you perhaps have a CD or DVD player with RCA audio outputs that you could use as a test, and "capture" the audio from that device and see if the same noise is present? That would tell you for sure it's a capture issue.

I have had some tapes do just that.... and I found that the playback machine might have a selection in audio menu where you can select longitudinal audio as opposed to Digital (I think it might be called HQ mode).

Second suggestion.... I've had a couple of Monaural Audio VHS Tapes, when played on a Stereo VHS, somewhat cancel the two channels.... Does it sound any better using just one channel?

listened a second time.... Sounds like it's rapidly
switching back and forth between two audio modes...
