Infinite White BG and Canon XF100 orientation?
on Oct 16, 2017 at 4:09:52 am

Hi. I'm shooting a narrator against a 9 ft. wide, pure white background, and if I don't turn the XF100 sideways, I can't get the full body shot, head to toe. But when I do turn the camera sideways to fix that, in post I don't have enough white on each side as I can see the light stands. To add white to the sides, my idea was to insert a video track using a color matte, use the eyedropper to try to sample the white, draw a mask around the subject and then feather the mask. It "sort of" looks ok, but the white doesn't exactly match if you look very closely. I'm wondering if I'm doing this correctly or if there's a better way. Thanks.

AE is the usual tool for this, but you could take a still from the video into photoshop, use the clone stamp and/or gradient tool to extend the existing white and blend it out to fill all the frame space you need. Then use that as a layer under the original video, crop with a feathered edge, done.

Thank you, I'll post over in AE too.

Use the Whites adjustment in Lumetri Color to adjust the white levels in your clip and your matte. Use the Lumetri Scopes to see when you have them lined up properly.

Hi Joe! Another great suggestion. I just started with the scope in Lumetri, but I'm excited to try. Thank you.
