Is anybody else frustrated with transcoding to apple pro res or pro res LT instead of transfering the original codec? It's really annoying that the transcoded files are 4 or 5 times larger than the originals. When I work with EX material, I can just re-wrap to mov instead of transcoding. Maybe apple will include native support in the next iteration.

This is a problem with all AVCHD/H.264 cameras. It's the same in the HDSLR world. Also the new NXCAM large sensor camera coming out next summer will have this problem. It seems even the NLEs that can handle H.264 natively, tend to bog down easily as it takes a lot of computer power to decode real time.

I agree with Craig,

I am using Vegas 10 and even though the timeline will take AVC in natively, it is too slow to edit with. So I transcode before I use it anyway.

Craig,

Would you elaborate on the comment about new large sensor nxcams next summer?

Announced on the 17th. Coming Summer 2011. Seems to be Sony's answer to Panasonic AF-100.

I've heard that it'll be Super35 sensor (based just announced F3 camera) not the VG10 sensor. It's still very early though in development. Lens mount will be same as NEX and VG10 though. Body and components are not final. I've heard it'll be in the $6000-$8000 range.

The XDcam User website has a blurry glass cased modular mock up of avchd 35mm sensor cam in it's Tokyo blog piece.

So long as it's got an uncompressed hdmi/hdsdi, and xlr audio, then perhaps it's really designed to be used with a nano/ki pro, to much greater effect than avchd, perhaps avchd in the 35mm should be viewed like having a stills facility in camcorder... a tad unfair, but perhaps it's real power for a professional is bypassing the codec, and using the front end.

[Chris Simpson] "perhaps it's really designed to be used with a nano/ki pro, to much greater effect than avchd, perhaps avchd in the 35mm should be viewed like having a stills facility in camcorder."

Actually a reasonable way to look at it. The Sony F3 records to XDCAM EX 35mbps rather than 50mbps and its prize will be the future dual link SDI out to HDCAM SR or whatever file format supplants it. In short, on board recording is really built in proxy or low budget solution (quasi run and gun) with real intent to feed to a much higher quality external recorder.

I think with specialized external recording devices and interchangeable lenses we are headed back to the days of modular cameras with portapacks, only everything is much more portable these days.
