NX5 HD-SDI and HDMI both active?

I will need to run hd-sdi to a projector and hdmi to a stream box for a live event. Are both these outputs active at the same time?

No they are not. When you go in the output menu, you select one or the other.

Thanks for the reply. I assume this info is from personal experience :). FYI: The NX5 manual indicates that if you select HDMI output, the SDI is also active ( see page 56 of the manual) ...... Unless I am reading this wrong. But, if not, what is the least expensive method to accomplish this... Keeping in mind that the stream box only has n HDMI input, and due to long cable run, SDI for the projector. Thanks

Well, to tell you the truth, the manual may be right.
I have not actually tried both at the same time. I just always switch the output and didn't have a need to test both at the same time.

Go ahead and test it.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to test before the event. No problem hooking up the hdmi, but I do not have any sdi equipment for hook up. I was hoping someone in the Cow Community has utilized this type of setup. :)

I did a test for you this weekend while setting up for a gig.

I planned to use an sdi monitor. So I set up the camera connecting the sdi output to the cable to the monitor. It worked fine.

Then I went to the camera menu and selected hdmi for output, while leaving the sdi monitor connected. The display went dark.

Then I turned the camera menu back to sdi from hdmi, and the sdi monitor displayed an image.

My conclusion, is that the sdi does not provide an output when the hdmi is turned on.

In answer to your second question, what to do about it. I would recommend a black magic batter operated sdi to hdmi convertor. I have used it successfully in the past. It has sdi in and hdmi out. Plus an sdi loop out, so you can have both outputs.

Hi John,

Wow! Thank you for running that test.
I ended up purchasing the following SDI to HDMI converter
ATOMS2H002 from Atomos. I liked this one better because the battery options give it a longer run time AND as a bonus can use Sony L type batteries (which I have plenty). I hope this will do the trick.

I am a little concerned that the NX5 manual indicated that this should be possible, but now I am prepared.

Many thanks

Ezra

I had the opportunity to test for myself this weekend.
When the output is set to SDI, The video signal is output thru both the SDI and HDMI. This means you can feed a projector/mixer with SDI and a monitor or streaming device with the HDMI.

Thanks for updating our information Ezra. I hope your shoot went well.

It looks like my test was not comprehensive.

I didn't see any text in my test.
Could be the overlay in your menu is set to on.
You can change the "display output" to just the LCD and viewfinder (P. 84 in manual).

Hope this helps :-)

When recording to a memory card and at the same time sending out a SDI signal the SDI signal have an overlay. Not a clean signal. This goes away if I remove the memory card. But since I need to record and send a signal on via the SDI This is an issue for me.
This is all during recording. Not playback. In playback there is no overlay.
