Does anyone know if it's possible to turn the shutter off in the NX5U? I shoot 60i mostly with this camera and for me there is no need to have a shutter on. It makes low light shooting almost impossible.

Can you explain what you mean by turning the shutter off?

You can't mean literally what you are saying, because if the shutter were off, that would mean zero light enters the camera.

I have a D30 and an EX3. Both cameras have a shutter off position. The NX does not seem to have this ability.

Rick,

Thanks for the clarity.

I read the ex3 manual, and the shutter off button is shorthand for
"Turn the autoshutter off so I can manually adjust it."

So, assuming that is what you are trying to accomplish, is manually adjusting your shutter, you do the following with the nx5.

1. Turn the auto/manual switch on the left side to manual.
2. press the shutter button until it displays the speed you want.
3. Press execute to save it.

The more complete steps are on page 31 of the manual.

Thanks for the legwork John, but what I'm referring to isn't an auto shutter vs manual shutter situation. With the EX3 I can set a manual shutter setting or I can turn off the shutter entirely. The viewfinder information actually says "shutter off". The NXCam works more along the lines of the PD150/250. If memory serves, those cameras had a shutter on all the time as well.

Rick this is a learning opportunity for me.

When would you turn off the shutter? Does it leave the camera in the open shutter state or closed shutter state?

There is no shutter to physically open or close. When the shutter is off, the camera doesn't introduce the sync rate at the user designated setting.

What is the benefit of that? Where do you use it?

John

In playing with the nx5, I discovered if you go to manual mode, press the iris button, and turn the iris smaller than f11, it will say shutter off.
