On Camera Lights for NX5U

Hello,

I have been doing some documentary stuff and when I'm following around my subjects (e.g. around their house or from one environment to another where I don't have control of light)sometimes my shots come out too dark. I think my shots would benefit from on light camera, but never had one before and when I look online I see they range from $60 to over a grand. really don't know what I should be looking for. Any recommendations/direction for the NX5U?

Thanks,
Keo

Best advice I can give is to get a dimmable light. It IS worth the extra expense. I'm not a huge fan of the LED on-camera lights although they do have advantages such as lighter weight, cheaper batteries, not heavy battery belts. But the throw distance isn't enough for me, maybe it is enough for your purposes?

This new baby has me very tempted: search "Lightpanel Croma". It's dimmable and you can actually adjust the color temperature!

Good luck. Eric

I've used a wide variety of on-cam LED's and, so far, NOTHING beats the HDV-Z96. Bright, wide throw, dimmable, magnetic diffusers, and can quickly detach and mount to a light stand for offset lighting. Several lights can also be quickly mounted together. Do a youtube search for this light for examples. You can get them for about $65 on eBay. I keep one in the case with my NX5U.

I can't stress how important a good quality light is. I purchased a MiniPlus Litepanel Fixture Flood Daylight (5600K) several years ago and the quality is great. Dimable LED and lasts around 3hrs before the battery gives out. Very good investment. Not cheap but a professional tool for the job.

I've been using an inexpensive LED panel I got from Amazon.com. Not great but I do a lot of "run & gun" corporate AV stuff and it works ok. I will upgrade one day.
My "heavy-duty" is a light from NRG Research. It is dimmable and carries lamps that dim from 10 to 100 watts and built-to-last. Not the best but it is a price performer. You need a belt and they aren't light either.
Here's a link to their product line:

Good luck
