Has anyone used an Atomos Ninja or Samurai with a NX5U? How is the quality and what types of applications does this system make sense?

What is it you are trying to accomplish that you are looking at those external recording units for?

I'm interested to hear if anyone has used this as well. Would be great for recording native ProRes files for use in FCP in ENG situations where time is critical and there's no time to wait for transcoding from AVCHD to ProRes.

Looking at options. For instance, to produce a Blu Ray and have all of the quality that is available. I understand that if a piece is going to YouTube, that this would be overkill. Just want to see if there is enough gain in quality to warrant additional gear and its cost.

i use the nx5 with a ninja through the hdmi port. techinically, the benefits are a better quality image (422), which what was my main concern and why i didn't need to pay extra for the samurai (sdi and hdmi is the same quality image though sdi is progressive rather than psf). the pro res files are easy to edit in fcp. coming from using an fx1 my eyes light up when i see the picture quality.

Good to hear about the higher quality. How do you rig the Atomos on your NX?

just a hot shoe mount. it tucks in nicely beside the camera or you can position it upwards if you want to use it for monitoring but i use the viewfinder for this. make sure you buy a hdmi cable that isnt too long as it can get in the way if you don't have it strapped down.

Hi;

The 422 8-bit capability of the NX5 is one of the features that is tempting me to buy it.

However, as some are reporting in other threads, the NX5 does have some problems with chromatic aberration - possibly not that bad, based on some of the tests I have seen. I'm worried that if I buy one and also a Ninja, I will have high-quality 422 files that capture the CA in wonderful detail ... ;-p

What are your conclusions about CA on your NX5? Have you done many full-zoom tests with objects against light backgrounds, such as sky?

Thanks,

Steve

i haven't read anything about the nx5 and chromatic aberration and certainly haven't noticed this. while not conducting specific tests i have taken quite a few shots on full zoom with the sky in the background. this is news to me and would appreciate any links to where you are reading this info. i should also say that i have only ever used the nx5 with the ninja so am unaware of how it performs on its own.

Hi Adam;

Thanks for the good report of low CA on the NX5. Here is the Cow thread where Glyn reported CA, and also provided some sample frame grabs:

Could I impose on you to provide some frame grabs of those full-zoom sky background shots? Would really help my decision process.

Thanks!

Has anyone tried out the Blackmagic Hyperdeck shuttle2? I would be interested in your opinion.. HDMI and SDI input. With Avid DNXHD 10bit
422 capture.
