Alexa: Single or double system

Hi,

As I have not seen the Alexa in person yet.

Is it possible to capture single system or does it always require double system.

I did not see audio inputs on the body and there do not seem to be any recorded audio specs on the website.

Thanks in advance.

There is a standard 5pin xlr connection on the front of the camera for stereo audio input and a mini stereo for headphone monitoring.

There are no other analog outs on the camera however. Pro Audio output is embedded in the HDSDI only.

Gary,

Is that recording a 24 bit 48K signal to the stereo file? Like for example, the prores file is full quality or is it just a reference for double system?

Alexa's internal recording of ProRes would qualify for both. Internal audio recording will be as 24bit 48K to conform to the highest Apple spec for ProRes but the quality would depend on whether you are shooting as PR4x4, HQ or you choose to capture as ProRes LT or Proxy as offline materials and then link back to the uncompressed or Arriraw masters that were recorded externally.

The Alexa shown at CineGear showed all 5 flavors of ProRes were available and that would allow offline/ online or with the mastering versions of ProRes there is no reason that Direct to Edit could not be implemented

That's not what I saw. I saw and heard Glenn stating that although all flavors will ultimately be available, ProRes 444 will not be available at launch. It will be made available with an upgrade sometime after that.

Hmm, not having seen or worked with this camera, it sounds like the internal audio is for reference only (unlike Sony or Panasonic HD Cameras) and that a double system recording would be necessary to get a good mix. Is this correct?

I'm trying to get to the bottom of that in this thread.

I'm pretty sure it's double system because there is no mention of the audio record capabilities.

David,

Why would you assume scratch only audio? The 5in XLR input is at the front of the camera not the rear, so maybe that is confusing to some, but the camera will record professional quality audio 24bit @ 48k that is not scratch audio in my world.

ust have not seen it "promoted" so I'm just trying to get some clarity on this.

I imagine most people will still to double system, but I like to know that the audio will be full quality which you just confirmed.

Great news.

Thanks Gary.

But how many channels of audio in? One, two or more?

Alexa has a 5 pin XLR input which does allow for stereo or dual mono ingest

Most of the high end cameras record audio as a dual mono signal to allow for splitting them into discreet channels as well as to combine them into a stereo signal.

Hey Mike,
I did not see you there. You are correct that not all of the flavors will be available at first, and likely only one ProRes version in the first cameras released, so I have heard the same that you have also, but the camera there at the booth was showing all 5 versions ( 4444 to Proxy) in the menus.
Did you go over all of the menu outputs listed? I asked a couple if they were all accurate as there were couple of odd ones in the list I am still trying to understand what the output labeled as 1.5G 444 could possibly be.
