ProRes Resolution Limitations...
on Nov 16, 2010 at 5:26:36 pm

I read in Gary's Alexa "Digital Age..." Review:

ARRIRAW records at 2880x1620 pixels, while the uncompressed output and the ProRes internal captures are limited to 1920x1080.

Gary (or anyone else), do you know if the 1080p Resolution of ProRes is a permanent thing?

I would like to get the full "raw" resolution of 2880x1620 (50% more resolution than 1080p) to play with in post, but in the ProRes4444 Codec. I know that this codec can handle 2K so it seems to be either a hardware limitation or a firmware thing preventing this from happening right now.

Also, to be sure:

Can you record LogC to ProRes4444 or are you stuck with Rec709 if you don't go raw out?

I'm pretty sure there are some FCP plugins to fix the log curve for Alexa, but I'm not sure if this is for converted raw material or not.

Thanks in advance.

[Shawn Larkin] "Gary (or anyone else), do you know if the 1080p Resolution of ProRes is a permanent thing?"

Shawn,

ProRes alone does not have those size limitations, it is limited in Alexa due to the speed of the media in use, ArriRaw will be coming after the first of the year (just a guess) and that will allow for import of the full image raster at that time using an external recorder.

"I would like to get the full "raw" resolution of 2880x1620 (50% more resolution than 1080p) to play with in post, but in the ProRes4444 Codec."

Arri has made no announcements to that effect, I would expect that if they want to deliver the full imager via prores it will not be for awhile.

So the real "bottleneck" regarding full image raster and over-cranking is the SxS media write speeds --not anything else with the camera hardware?

I ask in the hopes that faster SxS cards will fix both these limitations down the line.

I don't really want to record raw and use an additional device when ProRes4444 is enough.

As long as you understand it is limited inside the camera's hardware because of the media's recording limitations- yes.
"I ask in the hopes that faster SxS cards will fix both these limitations down the line."

while faster cards are indeed possible, I doubt Arri would stay there using SxS media, if say SSD modules were supportable for higher frame rates and resolutions.

Ah... but in the Arri world RAW would allow for direct access to the Imager's colorimetry giving the users power and control over a ProRes LogC file.

The point is not to use Arri Raw, which translates to creating enormous, cumbersome files recorded onset and big pipeline issues to deal with in post. The gained latitude and color accuracy does not outweigh the cost and time and inconvenience. And speaking from experience. I have seen the ultimate filmout demo at FotoKem and know about many tests all related to ProRes4444 via Alexa.

For me what is "revolutionary" about this camera is workflow and bang for buck with the codec.

So yes, SSD's make sense if they can be small enough to be housed in a mini enclosure that clips onto the camera (Red style) AND record ProRes4444 "full raster" at all available frame rates.

Thanks for your help.

It's 2880x1620 bayer, not 2880x1620 RGB.
