Arri ALEXA DIT workflow
on Sep 28, 2010 at 6:42:55 pm

Hi,

I'm just about the step onto a feature shooting on the Alexa as data wrangler but I don't know much about it though I am familiar with SxS, Red and other formats. I'm wondering if there's some sort of Clipfinder type software for the Alexa as there is for Red.

We are shooting 4:4:4 onto SxS cards by the way.

Also, any tips from anyone would be really appreciated!

Vi

Yes there is.

You can use clipfinder. Just drag the Quicktime footage into a clipfinder window. Or use Apple quicktime to watch the Alexa footage.

Villing.

Currently the existing software [packages do not properly handle alteration of the XML data pathways when files are moved from the Cards to a folder structure on a secondary device. For that reason it is currently recommended to CLONE each Card so that when the cards are remounted the XML path is accurate.

Gluetools Conform and Pomfort's Silver Stack will be the first file handling software packages that should properly modify the XML path structure when copying the Alexa standard UDF card formats.

Gary, when you say CLONE, I take it you mean to a disk image which can later be mounted and seen by the OS as if it were the original SxS card. Am I correct?

Worth noting also, Hans is currently updating Clipfinder to add Alexa support, such as LogC to video LUTs, and will work with the meta-data as soon as it is there in the XML.

The Foundry's STORM will be RED only at version 1.0, but in future that too is going to work with material from the ALEXA and other cameras.

[Nick Shaw] "Gary, when you say CLONE, I take it you mean to a disk image which can later be mounted and seen by the OS as if it were the original SxS card. Am I correct?"

Correct Nick. The XML path defines the cards as a "local volume" and if the cards are not mounted as volumes as they would be on the original media, the XML reports the path as broken.

Its good to know that Clipfinder will support the Arri workflows, its a great tool, I am sure that others will be moving forward on that front like the Foundry is with Storm.

I also expect to see ArriRaw implementations across the board on the NLE side by NAB or so.

Add me to the list of people wanting to take a look at your LUT plugin for FCP also.
