We have a dozen or so Hitachi 3.5 sata drives that we would be using in some kind of JBOD system. The reviews for the CalDigit VR 2 drive bay are excellent (I know it's a raid, but it also works as a JBOD), and we would like to invest in the array. I have seen from previous posts that the warranty is void if you use non caldigit drives. But has anyone used non Caldigit drives? If so, were there any issues? I know we'd be taking a risk, but it's the archived drives on the shelf that we need access to. Please let me know if you have had any success or failure. And I know about the Icy Docks. We have some, and they are falling apart. We want a sturdy hot swappable array.

[Hannah Walker] "We want a sturdy hot swappable array."

While I am a huge fan of CalDigit and the VR, the CalDigit VR is not really appropriate for your needs. Most important of all, CalDigit does not sell empty drive modules.

There are several companies that make high quality enclosures intended for the exactly the purpose you require. Check out the Stardom 2-bay model at: http://www.raidon-usa.com/stardom/sohotank_st2_feature.html.

and

The FirmTek product line, which includes excellent 2-bay, 4-bay, and 5-bay models. I own both their 2-bay and 4-bay models, which have provided flawless service for six years. I have about 20 of their empty drive modules, which cost only $20 each.

Our STARDOM ST2 product also features an internal power supply & at $159.99 it's a great price, 2 X Firewire 800/400 + USB 2.0 RAID 0 or JBOD, you can pick one up here: http://www.welovemacs.com/st2wabc.html
You can put whatever drives you have on hand inside, as long as they are the same model & capacity, that product will support 1 - 2TB drive per tray. Our 3.5" trays are also completely interchangeable with any of our other 3.5" drive supported products.

Any questions, feel free to drop us a line.
