UHD Apple Prores HQ or 444 drive speed needed
on Mar 16, 2016 at 5:11:22 am

Hello everyone, I'm trying to look for the right see specs for capturing on UHD 4K in Apple ProRes HQ or Apple ProRes 444, but can't find a reliable source of info.

We are trying to cros convert via Teranex UHD Footage that is on 23.98 to 50 [Pal]
Our setup, specs described bellow, are able to run UHD Apple ProRes 444 on Resolve 12 with no drops, but our capturing system drop frames during capture if we setup for UHD ProRes HQ, UHD ProRes 422 seems to be ok.

If someone can point me in the right direction, will be very appreciated.

Here are the tech specs.
Edit bay [playback]:
MacPro 5.1
3.2 GHz Q. Core Xeon
16 Gb Ram
Hocked to SAN via fibre
Resolve 12 studio x playback

Color Bay [capture]
MacPro Late 2013
3.7 Ghz Quad-Core
12Gb Ram
Resolve 12 studio x capture
Hocked to SAN via fibre

SAN storage, trough MetaSan
Writing Speed 311 Mb/s
Reading speed 354 Mb/s

Speed test screen grab here:

Also try some SSD trough thunderbolt with same result,
I only be able to capture on AppleProRes 422, not HD

Thanks

Hi -
I am confused by your post. Are you trying to capture across the network using MetaSAN ? What software program are you running to do the capture ?

ProRes4444 for UltraHD at 23.98 requires 148.5 MB/sec. Your system is running over 300 MB/sec. ProResHQ for UltraHD at 23.98 is 99 MB/sec.
So your networking running over 300 MB/sec can handle this data transfer. Something else is wrong - not your network.

1) tell me what software you are using to do the data transfer
2) try doing the conversion NOT across your network - do it to a local drive. Any 2 drive array will have enough speed to handle this, and certainly any small RAID array.

Thanks Bob as always for your promptly respond, I'll try to clarify my needs, but please apologies my short english.

The job.
I need to cross convert footage from UHD ProRes 444 @ 23.98, to UHD ProRes 444 @ 25.
I'll rent a Teranex to do this conversion, but for now I'm making test in order to make sure my setup has the proper speed to do it. [before I spend some money renting the Teranex], so this is what I'm doing.

1) The San
Its a 4 Rorke Data Galaxy HDx2 Raids about 24Tb each
Running over Metasan 5.1 with Xserve as metadata controller.
Overall SAN deliver about 310 Mb/s write and 352 Mb/s read trough 4 edit bays.

To obtain the best performance from the SAN, we shoot down all other systems, and any other task is processing at that time.

2) Playing back UHD ProRes 444 @ 23.98 from Edit bay 10.0.2.52
MacPro 4.1 w/Yosemite 10.10.3
12 Gb Ram
Decklink SDI 4K output card
Media pulling form SAN/Raid2 playing 2160p 23.98 either from DaVinci Resolve12 or BM Media Express [No drops]
AJA text speed for Raid2 its 310Mb/s write 352Mb/s read

An SDI cable no longer than 10 ft is connected between 2 edit bays, avoiding any switch, converter box, monitor etc.

3) Capture at UHD ProRes 444 @ 23.98 from Color bay 10.0.2.60
MacPro Late 2013 w/Yosemite 10.10.3
12 Gb Ram
Decklink SDI 4K capture card
Media writing to SAN/Raid1 @ 2160p 23.98 with Black Magic Media Express
AJA text speed for Raid is 308Mb/s write 350Mb/s read

Capturing Quicktime uncompress 8bit YUV (No drops on 10min capture test)
Capturing AppleProRes 422 (No drops on 10min capture test)
Capturing AppleProRes 422HQ (Drops after a couple of minutes)
Capturing AppleProRes 444 (Drops at the first 10sec)
Capturing Quicktime uncompress 10Bit YUV (Drops at the first 10sec)

Looks like a performance/compression issue while using ProRes444 since it drops on the first 10 secs.

Here is a link for some screen shots for the Player and Recorder setup and test result.

Thanks again and please let me know your thoughts.

Your Rorke Data Galaxy system is now Scale Logic -

http://scalelogicinc.com/

you should contact them, and ask them for support on this.
Please report back what they tell you.

I'll do, but since there are old I guess they will not support them.

As an update: I guess the issue is on the ProRes codec from black magic.
I run the same test outside of the SAN with also speed enough drives and same thing.
As a note, I can capture the following with no drops:

Uncompress Quicktime 8bit RGB,
Uncompress Quicktime 10bit RGB
DPX 10bitRGB
Apple ProRes 422
Apple ProRes 422HD [some drops]

So again it might be a ProRes codec issue.
I speak with black magic people and they will try to replicate the issue in their end.

I'll keep looking for alternatives.
Keep you posted.

Hi Juan Carlos,

I think you need a dual link SDI capture card for 4k 444,
and I think your data stream is roudabout 400 to 500 MBps.
So you Raid config is not fast enough,

cheers

Rainer
