Software RAID vs Hardware RAID?

Coming from a hardware RAID system that was super solid for me. However it has aged out and now need a new RAID that is compatible with OS X 10.10 (thunderbolt) I have the option of using a LaCie 5Big TB1with SoftRaid but unclear if this would be better than a hardware RAID? Anyone have experience with SoftRaid on mac running RAID 5? I worry about an OS upgrade and then not being able to get to my media.

If it's free try it, but make sure to backup everything. Hardware RAIDs are much more robust and reliable, and typically have higher throughput.

If you're purchasing a new unit you'll do a whole lot better with the deal on G-tech RAID I mentioned two or three threads down in this forum, which incorporates hardware RAID, enterprise level drives, and generates 660MB/sec vs 440MB/sec of the Lacie.
