SSD caching on a NAS - worth the bother?
on Jun 23, 2015 at 1:16:05 am

I'm having a 10GbE Synology RS3614xs+ & expansion RX1214rp NAS build for shared studio storage. It'll be connected to a HP2920 switch and feed a couple of 10GbE ready iMacs and about 8 mixed design/logging/production Macs of various flavours. We'll fill the units with 16 x 4TB HGST Ultrastars to begin with, leaving 8 bays free.

I'm wondering if there is any benefit to adding a pair of SSD's for read/read or read/write cache? I've read mixed reviews where some users found a boost in performance and others actually found it slowed things down. Just wondering how users and engineers have found SSD cache performance in a production context?

For reference 90% of our usage is read only of compressed HD video footage, with supporting design and photography work also sharing the NAS. I'm on the fence on this one though inclined to give it a try - we can always use the SSD's elsewhere in the studio if they fail to make a difference! Cheers
