External Network Video Disk Array / NAS setup? / backups
on Jan 25, 2015 at 9:40:46 am

Hi!

I work in a pc environment in 3d/compostion/video editing and I have two workstations in my network and two other office computers.

I have a basic internal disk array 5 with four disks in one of the workstations.

I'm looking for a external video disk array that I can access with both of my workstations.
While one workstation is rendering some project, I can still use the same unit and work in another project.

Looking to the synology diskstation ds414+.
Installing 4 HD 6 tB each giving me 18 TB of shared data in disk array 5.
Does this make any logic?

https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS414

Backups
Buy a second synology diskstation ds414+. that will be only attached to the primary disk array, making a exact copy of the primary disk array.
It would be something like a disk array 10, but using two independent disk units

In the event of a HD disk failure, I could just disconnect the defective disk array and keep working with the other disk array.

Any other ideas/solutions?

thanks

pedro

https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/RS3614xs+

this is a professional sinology product that supports 10GbE and will be fast enough for what you are trying to accomplish.

Hi Bob!

Thanks for your replay, after my initial post I did find an earlier post from you explaining in more detail the up's and downs' of this kind of configuration.
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/381/485#487

So in short the Synology RackStation RS3614xs+ Diskless System Network Storage will cost $4,836 without HDD's.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BEST...

From what I understand I still need to add the sinology gigabit Ethernet (10GbE to the system.

Also each workstation will need an adicional 10Gibabit Ethernet adaptor card.

A quick search on newegg I came across several different brands but with a huge price difference between them, being intel the most expensive one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BEST...

Also missing in the picture is the switch to connect all this, I also don't have any reference of brands and prices.

In the end, for my needs, two workstations, but just one of them would be editing, the other would be rendering 3D, after effects comps, etc, it's over the top.

In other post in another forum, another person said that with a disk station DS1515+ using RJ-45 1GbE LAN Port I could expect around 100MB/second for each workstation. It's far from perfect, but in terms of price is a big difference.

Any additional thoughts are welcome of course, and thanks for your time.

pedro

Hi -
while I am not a big fan of the Synology/Thecus/QNAP as a solution, if you have at least one of these systems with a minimum of 8 drives, and the 10G switch, and the 10G card inside the Synology/Thecus/QNAP, then yes, you can get this to work.
