RAID 5 with both thunderbolt and firewire?
on Oct 29, 2014 at 8:20:22 pm

We are a small operation of 2-3 editing stations for a the media dpt of a non-profit. We have about 15TB to 20TB of footage that we want to keep online and accessible to all stations. The computers vary from Macbook Pros and a tower all with an OS of around 10.7+

We are transitioning from FCP 7 to Premiere Pro and will probably purchase a new Macbook once that transition happens.

I'd like to set up each station with its own RAID 5 storage for reading, and a separate drive for writing. The RAIDS would be clones. Most of the computers we use now do not have thunderbolt ports but anything we'd buy in the future would. It seems to me we'd want the ability to daisychain.

So... Is there a great drive out there that will connect to my older systems but to a future souped up mac as well? (IE firewire & thunderbolt)

I think the simple answer there is no. I think there are a few enclosures out there that have FW800 and USB3, but I don't think there's anything out with FW800 and Thunderbolt. Your best bet is probably to upgrade your RAID enclosures as you upgrade computers. New computer, new RAID. Migrate your data, good to go. If you don't have the budget for that, $30 gets you a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter for your new computer until you can upgrade all of your enclosures. Keep in mind, though, that adapter doesn't go the other way.

Thanks for the direct clarity! I'm looking at G-Drive RAIDs... Do you have a preference or recommendation?

Well I'm partial (read: biased) to the Maxx Digital ThunderRAID Mini, but G-Tech also make a great product. You can e-mail me directly if you have any questions about that product or any other Maxx Digital products!

How much headroom does a RAID 5 need? I know that I already have less access to Gigs when I set it up this way, but for performance, do I need to give myself even less?

Thanks for all the help!

You lose one disk amount of space. For example, if you have 4x3TB drives, you will have 9TB usable space. The performance of Thunderbolt is more than adequate for editing almost anything up to 4k.
