Transfer files from Thunderbolt-only raid to PC
on Sep 23, 2014 at 8:38:41 pm

Hi there experts.

I have a dilemma. I've just nailed down a color grading job for a feature film. Unfortunately, all the editor's work, as well as the source R3D files are on a mac using 3 Thunderbolt-Only Raids.

How can I get all those files from those raids arrays onto my PC?

Would a Thunderbolt card in my PC work? And if so, could I then just daisy chain the raids into my PC and work directly from them? Is this possible?

My main concern, of course, is to just get the files into my system for grading, so a straight transfer would be fine.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

1) buy a Mac
2) network the two computers (you need a Mac to do this) and transfer the files from their drives via the Mac Ethernet port to your drives
3) buy a Mac

Like Bob said, chances are buying a MAc would be best. There are PCIe cards for PC's, but they are very motherboard specific. I've never tried any of the cards, so I can't say how well they do work. I've seen these cards for HP Z-series and certain ASUS mobos, I'm sure there are more.

Good Luck!

Todd is correct. There is no 50 dollar card you can add to your little PC (or your old Mac Pro) to read Thunderbolt. You have to PAY to play.

Hate MAC's? Want to hookup to a PC ?
Buy one of the new Z Series HP Workstations -

that have thunderbolt.

Now don't start whining that you can't afford to buy this new stuff - because ALL OF US have to buy this new stuff. Like I said - you want to play in this game, you have to KEEP SPENIDNG MONEY. How long? Forever.

A slight variation.
Borrow a MacBook Pro from someone. It had Thunderbolt and GigE.
Network that to your PC.
Copy all data to an equal number of eSATA or SAS RAIDs or drives in your PC.
Budget about 5 hours per TB for the copy process over GigE (at 60 MB/sec)
