new Pegasus: MP startsup but screens are black?
on Jul 24, 2014 at 1:56:37 am

I just purchased a new Promise Pegasus2 to add to another that has been installed for 6 months or so.

Both drives power on fine with normal lights. MacPro appears to boot normally but the monitors are black.

Can anyone suggest what is going on?

Plugging both into the back of the MacPro solved the issue; both cables work. I did have one Thunderbolt port open (two older ACDs, Matrox adaptor, Tb USB/FW hub, and existing Pegasus2 R4).

The question remains as to why would daisy chaining the two R4s not work?

The TB controller likely didn't have the resources available for both drive controllers. Some controllers firmware don't have allot of options for resources depending on how the firmware is implemented. If those resource ranges are not available then either the device wont initialize or the controller will not complete the startup sequence. Also remember TB is not endless in bandwidth and latency is increased for every device added. The 20Gbs bandwidth is divided among all devices attached. Once you get beyond 3 or 4 devices then your chance of running into problems will increase.
