sorry if this is the wrong forum but I figured you guys understand drives. I was trying to mount my western digital 2tb mybook outside of its housing so i could take advantage of the sata speeds. (the housing only has 800 ports).

i am using a voyager dock and a lacie sata to thunderbolt connection. the drive pops up but cannot be read. i put it back into the housing and it works fine.

how come it wont read outside of the housing?

Hi Stephen,

if you want a professional advice: Don't fiddle around with drives in a fixed housing - it does no good. You are lucky you didn't loose your drive.
Anyway - there are a lot of housings on the market, where you can swop harddrives with different connections (faster than USB).

Cheers

Rainer

We work with a USB 3.0 Icybox and Hitachi Deskstars. If you want eSata connectivity look for Raidsonic housings.

Cheers,

I've had nothing but trouble with the "toaster" style enclosures. I'd suggest getting one with a trayless slot.

or think about getting one with 4 trays.

I also have some Icybox style enclosures and they work great as long as you're not swapping drives a lot. THey are by far the most affordable option. There are many companies using the same hardware. THis is identical:
