Updating an older Dulce System - controller options?
on Feb 4, 2013 at 9:49:56 pm

We have pulled an Apple G5 out of an industrial edit suite and replaced it with a used Mac Pro which has PCI-e slots. We need a new controller for the Dulce Quad Duo in that room, as the G5 had PCI-X slots.

Dulce's only solution was a new controller card for almost $1000 - my knowledge about storage is not deep: do I have to use a Dulce controller or are other controllers compatible and OK to use? I couldn't find any Dulce controllers on eBay.

Thank you!

If you can find out what kind of interface your array uses, it's entirely possible you could use a non-Dulce solution.

However, (and this is just an example), many quality SAS RAID cards (even older 3Gb ones) are still selling from reliable parties at around $1000/pop - at the prices you're being quoted, I'd have a hard time believing it's anything but.

Having said that it might be time to look at the longer-term picture and pickup a new card for future higher-speed expansion requirements - but wait and see what you need first.

Oh stop it Wynn -
you are going to spend the $1000, and that's all there is to it.
There are hardly any miniSAS host adaptor cards on the market that have Apple OS X drivers - and these companies are ATTO Technology, Areca (which is the exact card that Dulce uses) and the horrible Highpoint, which is about half price, and many users on this forum can tell you their experience with Highpoint host adaptors.

You have gotten wonderful performance, and reliability from your Dulce products - you paid the price, and you got great performance and reliablity, becuase they used a GREAT card from Areca. So, now you need from eBay the Areca 1221x to run in your PCIe machine. This will allow you to not lose your data, because every card has different RAID formatting. Buy the Areca (even used) and you will have no issues. Of course, Dulce has also given you wonderful support, and now you will go to eBay, buy a used ARC-1221x card, and if it doesn't work, or you need the firmware to be updated for your OS - WHO IS GOING TO HELP YOU WITH THIS ? Your eBay seller ?
There is a reason that Dulce charges this money. They are a great company that SUPPORTS YOU.

and another thing Wynn -
let's look at another manufacturer -
let's look at G-Tech for a moment, with two identical products (almost)-

this is the G-Tech GSpeed eS -
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=GSpeed+eS&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&st...

and on this same page, you will see the more expensive G-Tech
GSpeed eS Pro, for MORE money ?

Do you know why it's more money ? Because the regular model has the Highpoint host adaptor card, which will ultimately corrupt your data, and never rebuild your RAID, and the more expensive product has the EXPENSIVE and wonderful ATTO R680 card, which works like you expect a professional card to work.

SO - it's your choice Wynn.

I agree 100% with Bob, spend the money on a decent RAID controller card & stay away from Highpoint at all costs.
