Does anyone have experience rebuilding a RAID 5?

I've had a raid 5 become desynchronized. (at least that's what one person told me)

All the drives are good (I think they are, the controller says they are, and the platters spin), but the controller isn't. (It's a LaCie 4-Big)

I can send it away to http://www.d2recovery.com and see if they can fix it for $1200.
OR it seems like it's something I could do with the right software.

1 Make clones of the drives, work off the clones with a RAID restructuring app?

Am I silly? I don't want to risk data more, but I don't have $1,200.

And before you ask, if I had a backup of this data, I would just buy a new, different RAID and put that data on it and use the current raid for a doorstop.
(oh, or maybe a mail box, that would be fun)

Whoops, REPAIR is the the word I'm looking for

Repaid and then rebuild it. I was typing too quickly.

It's possible to recover IF you have the same controller and swap the drives in the same order. But there are also firmware revisions and such that could make it improbable. Many, like you, learn the hard way that RAID is not a backup system - this is why many data servers are set up in a RAID, but then get backed up nightly and stored offsite.
You might check some of the DIY raid recovery softwares out there, but I've heard mixed results from those. Might be easier, faster, and less frustrating, to get a new RAID system and a backup solution, and move forward.

Thanks for the advice TC. We've worked with LaCie to try and fix it here, they have been helpful, but don't know RAID tech like someone that deals with it. So now I'm left with these two options.

(we did get a different controller, but it didn't work either)

And actually, this WAS the backup of another RAID 5 array that failed at the same time. We never imagined that both would have problems as the same time. (different problems, I think. we are still working on that)

Offsite would be nice. But it's hard to afford offsite backup.
Anyway, good advice all around. We'll tackle the revised backup when we recover from this. =)
