Getting the most performance out of my RAID for editing a documentary.
on Jan 11, 2012 at 6:15:01 am

Am looking for the best, most current EXTERNAL RAID solution for a documentary project that is about to go into post-production.

Currently, the footage is on 3sets of MIRRORED rugged drives, but this is too messy to hand off to an editor.

I'm looking for a RAID enclosure solution that will allow eSATA compatibility with MacPro and MacBook Pro (utilizing an express card SATA card).

I have 5TB of footage from the shoot,
But as the B-camera (5D) footage has not yet been transcoded to prores422, I am estimating about 6.5 TB total.

As I have all of the footage redundantly mirrored on the rugged drives,
I'm looking for the fastest setup that will allow online editing of the HD footage.
I'm guessing that either RAID 5 or 0 will be the best for me,
But frankly, I know so little about editing off of a RAID:
I've used a media sonic 4-bay RAID enclosure in RAID1 configuration for years just to back up my photography and never had to think about speed/performance.
Now I must.
Which is why I turn to you, Mr. Cow.

As a bonus, if someone knows of a good/reliable/cheaper place to pick up enclosure/drives in Canada,
I'd love to know.

Thanks so much for all your help.
It truly is appreciated.
