ffmpeg, create MPEG2 from series of GIFs
on Oct 23, 2011 at 5:47:43 am

Hi All,

I have a series of 60 individual, static GIF images, each 720x576 pixels (actually moving hands on a small clock). I wish to encode this to MPEG2 video at 2920kb/s with a duration of 60 seconds (1 sec per GIF frame).

Current command line is

ffmpeg -i tc_%02d.gif -r 1 -y -an -vcodec mpeg2video -b 2920kb -r 25 -s 720x576 TC_ZL3JVX.mpg

where the 60 GIF files are named tc_00.gif to tc_59.gif

Error message is unable to find a suitable output format for TC_ZL3JVX.mpg

The resulting MPG will eventually be muxed into a transport stream for transmission using Digital Amateur TV, but that is a few steps away.

Any help or pointers appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

have you tried stripping away portions of the command?
starting here:
ffmpeg -i tc_%02d.gif test.mpg

and slowly adding terms until you get to here:
ffmpeg -i tc_%02d.gif -r 1 -y -an -vcodec mpeg2video -b 2920kb -r 25 -s 720x576 TC_ZL3JVX.mpg

maybe it's a 2 step process.
you could use imagemagick to convert the individual frames to jpgs? maybe it would be happier with that?
or first make a movie without specifying the codec and then transcoding that movie to the final desired state?
