HQ Transcoding from XDCam HD MXF to...?
on Jul 28, 2011 at 8:29:28 pm

Hi all,

I'm happy that I found this forum after a few days of searching....and hope, that you can give me support. I'm using ffmpeg/ffmbc with ubuntu 11.4 since two weeks, and the first steps were very difficult for me - not easy to work only with a command-line tool.
The problem:
I have recorded a clip with a XDCamHD Recorder, HD 4:2:2, 1080i50p. Now, I want to convert this file, so that I have a good rate between quality and file size. That means, that it must be good enough for viewing on TV (FullHD), but no longer for broadcast or editing.
The file:

ffmbc -i C0001.MXF
FFmbc version 0.6
Copyright (c) 2008-2011 Baptiste Coudurier and the FFmpeg developers
Input #0, mxf, from 'C0001.MXF':
Metadata:
timecode: 12:18:02:20
Duration: 01:19:55.60, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 37987 kb/s
Stream #0.0(und): Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 1440x1080i tff [PAR 4:3 DAR 16:9], 35000 kb/s, 25.00 fps
Stream #0.1(und): Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 768 kb/s
Stream #0.2(und): Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 768 kb/s
Stream #0.3(und): Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 768 kb/s
Stream #0.4(und): Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 768 kb/s

I found something to convert to MOV:

ffmpeg -i -pix_fmt yuv422p -vcodec mpeg2video -flags +ildct+ilme -top 1 -dc 10 -flags2 +ivlc+non_linear_q -qmin 1 -lmin '1*QP2LAMBDA' -vtag xd5c -rc_max_vbv_use 1 -rc_min_vbv_use 1 -b 50000k -minrate 50000k -maxrate 50000k -bufsize 36408333 -bf 2 -aspect 16:9 -acodec pcm_s16be -f mov output.mov -newaudio

but the file size is not really less.

I tried a lot, but found nothing which was acceptable. Of course, I am a newbie to ffmpeg/ffmbc, and many of my parameters and arguments at the command-line doesn't work. Maybe, I used the wrong order of arguments or something like this....
For example I tried:
ffmbc -i C0001.MXF -vcodec mp4 -qscale 1 -acodec mp4 -ab 192k -ac 4 output.mp4

Well, anyone here who know the right commands (and can explain the arguments?).

Thanks and regards,

René
