I want to purchase a Flanders monitor for our grading room and was wondering if the CM171 is big enough for color critical work ??? Thanks

For what it is worth here are two observations that might help:

1. The general consensus seems to be that a 17" unit is too small to serve as a primary color grading monitor.

2. Despite point 1 I know a lot of people that do, successfully, use a 17" unit as their primary color grading monitor.

My personal opinion on this is that a 17" unit becomes more problematic as a primary grading monitor if you tend to deal with a lot of noisy footage as noise can be hard to judge well on a smaller monitor. The other factor is of course room size. Some people go with the 17" units because they are working with very limited space, in most average to larger size rooms it will seem quite small though...especially if clients will be in the room with you.

We have and use on occasion another 17" model from FSI and it does work just fine. The issue with the size really comes up if you have clients in the room. It's a bit of a small monitor for two people to look at together, especially if you have the monitor centered up in front of you.

But if the question is solely "does this work" the answer is yes. Is it optimal? No, but it will work, particularly if you pair it up with a 50" or larger plasma screen.

Do you have a dealer in Montreal or do i have to buy direct ??? Does the monitor ship calibrated ?? How often should one calibrate such monitor ?? If there's no local service for Flanders, can calibration be done by the user ? Thx

We sell direct. Unit comes calibrated. You can send the unit to us for calibration or do calibration yourself, lots of options there ranging from manual toggles (gain, bias, etc.) to integration with advanced 3D LUT based solutions like CalMAN Studio and LightSpace CMS. You can learn more about calibration options here: http://www.flandersscientific.com/index/calibration.php , but if you have additional questions contact us at Sales@FlandersScientific.com or +1.678.835.4934.
