LCD for broadcast monitors

Just a question about using LCD displays for monitoring and colour grading. Panasonic plasmas are sometimes suggested for broadcast monitoring & colour correcting when one of these FSI (or other Grade 1) models isn't in your budget. Trouble with plasmas is they are big, 42" and up. A smaller consumer LCD would be a much better fit into an edit suite. (Mac Pro -- FCP -- to Matrox MX02 Mini -- out via HDMI to the HDTV). I notice that the FSI displays aren't huge, 17" or 24".

Do the FSI units use some kind of full array LED backlight on their LCDs to achieve proper black levels? Are plasmas really that superior to the better consumer LCD/LED HDTVs in terms of colour and black levels? We're talking about a "good enough" solution here, not going to be doing anything for broadcast.

Any ideas?
