Longer shooting on 550D

Hi All,

I have just installed magic lantern for the first time and It has got me wondering about any other potential features I could unlock specifically the ability to shoot for longer. I know that the format of the cards currently limits video files to 4GB but is there something that can change the card format to something that will allow longer filming periods?

Regards

My understanding is that the limit is BOTH a file size limit AND a time limit but it would be worth the research to get a definitive answer to that. If the time is not hardwired in then you could try switching to filming in 720p mode but I have a sneaking suspicion that won't work either which gets us back to the starting point, doesn't it? Sorry I'm not being any help on this one.

[Steve Crow] "My understanding is that the limit is BOTH a file size limit AND a time limit but it would be worth the research to get a definitive answer to that"

Yes it's both. The file-size restriction is because of the FAT32 file-sytem of the card, the 29:59 min. restricion has somehow to do with taxes AFAIK and it's built-in.

I read a discussion on a german DSLR forum some time ago about formatting the card in a different way (can't remember how) to break that 4GB limit. Don't have the link handy so I can't look it up right now, but as far as I can remember, the conclusion was, that neither of those limits can be broken... even when not using FAT32

I was under the impression the camera controls the recording time, and it hasn't been hacked yet.

There's nothing out there that extends the recording time, unfortunately.

Cheers for your input Peter.

Fixing the shooting time problem would have opened up new possibilities especially if I were to start filming events. I'm looking at new cameras now. Enjoying the footage from the new Black Magic Cinema Camera.

Thanks everyone

Glad I helped! Checked the thread in the german forum, an indeed, as Sareesh wrote, there seems to be no way (yet) to extend recording time on the Canons...

You might be able to lower the quality using the bitrate setting in Magic Lantern. I haven't tried it, but it might be able to buy you a little more time (if a little is all you need).

Joshua - If you want to shoot events with an inexpensive interchangeable lens camera, and don't want to wait for the Black Magic Cinema Camera, you can get unlimited video clip length with the £600 Panasonic GH2 and the Kasilev ptool hack.
