GH2 and the BMD HyperDeck Shuttle Record Problems
on Aug 13, 2012 at 1:01:36 pm

Hello All :-)

I have a BMD HyperDeck Shuttle 2 and it records uncompressed and in the DNxHD (220) codec.

I can import, play and edit the files just fine, but there's a major problem that makes the files useless.

Static scenes are fine except they are flat and require color correction to make them aesthetically acceptable.

The main problem is that the files have horrible interlacing problems... and I'll explain.

First of all, it doesn't matter whether I shoot in FSH, HBR, 24p or don't hit the camera record button at all and just record from the cleaned display... the same problem occurs, so it isn't a camera setting (I've spent 2 days experimenting with different cam settings as well).

When panning I get fine interlacing lines. They are annoying and unacceptable in their own right, but it gets worst. Once encoded (as in for distribution) the problem is accentuated. Huge lines appear and and make the video look like it's an incarnation of a zebra.

On close inspection of the files in PP CS6 I can see that the file is filled with ghost images, which I believe is a result of duplicate frames that the GH2 has served to the BMD Shuttle 2.

I've read about certain fixes for this and a the color shift issues, but a) most sound too difficult to be used in a practical workflow b) some require AE, which I have but makes the workflow more complicated and time consuming c) at the end of the day, they may not even work.

So I'm here with hat in hand hoping that a discussion might yield some fruit that can help me, and the ever growing population of people looking for a solution.

I hope that out of all the talented members here that some of you have the pieces of the puzzle

Thanks in Advance for your Support!!

Hello Again... A slight Update...

I said that extra frames were being added, well I read that recording from the GH2's HDMI port added and deleted frames randomly, but upon closer inspection (I was going to experiment with manually removing the extra frames) I found that there are no extra frames per-say.

The ghosting I described is at the heart of the problem.

When panning each frame appears to be a combination of 2 frames at different times. So depending on the speed of the pan (and the shutter speed - the higher the SS the closer together is the dual image) you get an interlaced image (half of the lines) at one point in time, and another (the other half of the lines) at a later point in time. Where they overlap, the image is solid, but on either side you have a "ghost" image which when played back you can see through the image where the missing lines are, thereby giving a notched edge effect.

And I haven't even wrapped my head around how I can fix that yet??

Thanks for your interest and feedback!!

AM :-)

maybe your GH2 has vitali hack applied?
-> there is no need for this when using an extern recorder.
I sometimes had asynchron (A/V) recordings with Ninja because of altered firmware.
best,

Hello Kurt,

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have any hacks applied right now, but I did in the past.

To get it back to stock I had to use Ptools and uncheck all of the settings because the GH2 wouldn't let me simply reinstall the stock 1.1 firmware. I always wondered if that would have a negative affect??

Do you know of a better way to restore my GH2 to ver 1.1 from Panasonic??

Thanks Again!!

AM :-)

you need to go back to 1.0 and add the 1.1 afterwards

I thought that would be easier... but I can't find the ver 1.0 firmware??

Probably you are doing something wrong because there is no problem to re-install the stock 1.1 firmware without passing through the1.0.
About recording the HDMI out of the GH2, don't waist your time.
All you'll get is crap.
Read in personal-view about.

Hello and Thanks for the Reply,

I may very well be doing something wrong (or not) that's why I asked the question.

I have hacked my 1.1 firmware and in order for it to act like un-hacked firmware you go into Ptools and un-check all of the boxes.

I did that... but that isn't the same as re-installing the stock firmware.

And I already know that using the above procedure is suppose to be the same as using the stock 1.1 firmware, but that isn't what I want to do.

When attempting to re-install the stock firmware, the system thinks it is already installed and will do nothing, thereby preventing me from actually re-installing the stock firmware.

So how would you do it?

Thanks Again.

AM :-)

[Anthony Marotti] "When attempting to re-install the stock firmware, the system thinks it is already installed and will do nothing, thereby preventing me from actually re-installing the stock firmware."
Do you get any kind of warning from the camera?

Anthony,
i've patched the camera many times and never had problems to re-patch or reinstall the original firmware (GH2__1.1.bin).
However, always when I made a new patch, after giving him an incremental name -as needed by PTools- (Gh2__1.2.bin or whatever), before installing I always changed the name to "GH2__1.1.bin".
So every time I install a patch the camera things that I'm just overwriting the firmware with the same 1.1 version.
I don't know if you have installed a version with a name (ie 1.3), the camera won't accept a version with a lower version name (ie 1.2).

Hello Again :-)

I don't get any error from the camera at all.

When I load the Stock Firmware GH2__1.1.bin into the root directory on my SDHC card and insert it into the GH2, I power on the camera and then press the preview button. At this point I should get a screen asking me if I want to install the update or something to that effect, but I get a message that essentially says: No viewable Image to Display...

So it's telling me that it can't find any clips to play, so it doesn't recognize my stock firmware as needing to be installed.

If I follow the same procedure with a patch, the GH2 asks me if I want to run the update.

And Yes, I used the name that PTools suggested as the default, which was ver 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, etc.

So I'm not sure how to rectify this??

Any insight is appreciated, and thanks again for the reply!!

Anthony

Hi Anthony,
I've had my self some times the "No viewable Image to Display", but sorry I can't remember in which circumstances. I think that when the batteries they were not at 100%.
Did you checked your batteries before trying to re-install?
