Anyone have any suggestions on this?
All I'm looking for is to use the monitor for focusing.

If it's just for focusing...here is a great affordable option:

http://jag35.com/new/products/jag35-monitor/

you won't find anything cheaper.

Ehhhh...affordable yes. Good for focusing? Not at all. With only 800x480, getting that crit focus the 7D is going to be hard to get with that rez. Remember, you're dealing with 1080-freakin-p footage here with a camera that can produce DOF as thin as the side of a dime.

In this case, I would say cheaper is not better :'(

This is what I have.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/646091-REG/Marshall_V_LCD651ST_HDMI_V...

Better rez, with things like false color to help you out. Heaftier price too, just about the same price of the 7D, but dont let that fact steer you awa from a very important peice of equiptment.

I have read a bit about that monitor and it seems pretty great.
Like you said; a bit heafty pris but certainly money well spent.
I guess I'll have to start saving up. One can predict there are going to be a wide variety of monitors for dslr:s in a not to far future though...

I encourage u to still look around though. Marshal is a nice little company, and they do have a nice range foe field/on-board camera monitors. While 800x480 isn't ideal, it would have to work if that's what u can afforde at the moment.

Key thing is, do some jobs with what u got, then use that money to start saving up for better things.

Look at Small HD... or use an HDMI to SDI converter and an existing HD monitor

I´m about to invest in the 7D and a z-finder and see how that works out first. I was planning to try it on some studio shots and it would be nice to have a small monitor for that but I can use a flat screen tv that sits in the studio for the time being.
This is a really great new way of working for me since I've been working with a wide range of cameras throughout the years, from 35mm film to RED which all is very expensive to rent.

Actually I've just ordered DP1. Hopefully they are as good as I've heard. The price seems very reasonable for what you get. I'm shooting my first 7D feature (photography this Friday) so I need something damn good as focusing is a huge issue. I see a lot of DSLR footage which isn't quite on the money at the expense of overdone shallow depth.
Remember that we are shooting people not statues! Close that iris a couple of stops if unsure. I'll keep you posted on how good this DP1 monitor is.

That seems like a really nice alternative! Ok price too.
I would be really great if you could post your thoughts on it as you work.
Unfortunately it seems to only be available in the us...

Looks like I'm a little late on this thread but am just researching the external evf deal for my new 7D, so thought I'd weigh in.

I just read up on this Zacuto product today...
http://www.zacuto.com/zfinderevf

Has lots of features, maybe too many for the novice, but it looks awesome with a loop included and a price point of $675.

DSLR accessories are getting better and better all the time.

So, I was seriously considering purchasing the DP4, but I have a shoot coming up the beginning of July. It seems there is a delay on the smallhd DP4 and it won't be available till Mid-July :(

Specifically looking for a monitor that can do hdmi pass thru.

Marshall is too expensive for me
Jag 35 doesn't have pass thru
DP4 and Z finder are both back ordered till Mid July.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

So this is a pretty awesome and cheap alternative to the on board monitors, which as we all know are sometime an expensive pain. This product was invented a couple of years ago by me, an LA director of photography. It fits on the rails and is basically a big ass magnifying glass which gets you about 2 to 4 times closer to the LCD. It's called the Magnifty and we're selling it now on our ebay store http://stores.ebay.com/Magnifty or at Samy's Camera in LA and Pasadena. It's $79.95. Super-durable and is supposed to fit on your rails or varying sizes, but for sure Red Rock. Watch the VIDEO:

I've used mine for over two years and don't leave home without it. It really does work. I also stack two of them together and get SUPER close at times. Other advantages are that it provides a great stability point and allow you to make and attach a sun shade for bright days. Allows you to use both your eyes to focus as opposed to the monocle concept. There's a patent pending. What else...? Ah yes, we have a warning which might seem obvious: Don't shoot into the sun with it. I've done it and it can give you a nasty tan and hurt your eyes. It's a magnifying glass! If you've ever burned leaves with one using the sun you get the idea...

Enjoy! ~mark
