Best AVCHD converter/player?
on Jun 4, 2012 at 12:37:15 am

My roommate just got a GH2 (on my recommendation) for interview/event videography, and she has no NLE. My Canon .MOV files played on Windows or Mac, but AVCHD is not so easy. Is there a favorite/best value for her to view/save/basic in-out functions? She has an editor she works with, just needs basic QC in the field. Please save a grown woman from crying (or killing me). Thanks in advance for any help...

In no particular order, here are some that I know of to convert AVCHD on the cheap:

http://www.wondershare.com/pro/dvd-converter.html

I also believe some of the later versions of Toast will convert AVCHD, but I believe I heard there was some type of "gotcha" or quirk with sync or something with that. Double check me there.

I'm sure there are other options if you just want to preview them.

Thanks Matt,

I was hoping for a GH2 owner who possibly started with just the camera and no NLE: what did they do. Canon files play on Vista (WMP), and with Mpeg Streamclip, you can get by enough to see and set i/o. Bang for buck, I'd say Sony Vega for native codec with features.

unless they've made it less compatible since V9, it comes with Blue-Ray output too. PC only.

VLC (videolan.org) plays the .mts files from AVCHD just fine.

I don't have a GH2, but I have a couple of different AVCHD-devices, and their files can all be played in VLC.
