Mounting accessories off-camera?

I am looking for a way to have multiple accessories on my DSLR rig, but without having them mounted to the hot shoe on top of the camera. I have a Canon T2i/550D. Right now I have an external monitor and a shotgun mic that I mount together on top of my camera using a hot shoe splitter. The splitter I have is raised and makes the rig very top heavy. I checked out the J-Rod system, which is lower and has three hot shoe mounts instead of two, but I would like to keep the accessories off-camera, perhaps mounted to a rod system, which I do not yet have. I've been looking but I can't seem to find any info about mounting accessories off-camera on a rod system or something similar. If anyone has any advice on this topic, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Jake,

Saw this company at the Creatasphere gig last fall in Burbank.

Seems to have a lot, of fairly well made yet inexpensive solutions for the genre.

They have a DSLR accessory frame, which can support, a Zoom, a monitor, LED's, and, they also have rods plus more.

I have not bought it yet, but the gear is made in the USA as far as I know.

Local in Vista, by San Diego CA.

Don't know anything about them, but these always looked interesting to me; http://www.bracket1.com/

Also putting a sturdy quick lock shoe / bracket between the camera body and all the accessories always made sense to me as it allows the camera to be quickly detached from the rig for quick handheld shots.

Yeah what Phil said, that's what I use. I have a video on my blog showing the rig which holds two wireless lavs, a Zoom H4N, Rode Video Mic (in hot shoe) - it's not super fancy or anything but it works okay for me. The rail-based systems look very nice but too pricy for me right now.

Thanks guys! I appreciate you helping me find what I couldn't. I'm especially impressed by the Bracket1 brackets, which looks like they let you mount a hot shoe onto them wherever is convenient.
