1080p letterbox

Hello,

I've noticed that on a lot of 1080p videos online there is letterbox/black border at the top and bottom of the footage.

When I've filmed and exported anything in 1080p I don't have this box. Is this a creative choice on their part? Surely they must be cropping the top and bottom of their footage to achieve the effect?

Unless I'm missing something entirely!

Thanks in advance.

Yes, very often letterboxing is a creative choice.

1080p video is 16:9 ("widescreen"). If you like to have "super-widescreen", like 2.35 : 1 (cinemascope) or even wider you have to letterbox your video in a 16:9 composition, since most platforms like Youtube or Vimeo don't natively support those aspect ratios.

[Peter Burger] "like 2.35 : 1 (cinemascope) or even wider "

Just for clarity; in terms of pixels, the width is the same - it's the height that is different.

Thanks for that! It was frustrating me not knowing why some videos were like that and some weren't!
