Panasonic GH2 hack a reality
on Jul 18, 2011 at 10:25:54 pm

It was only a matter of time! The Panasonic GH2 has been successfully hacked by the illustrious Vitaliy Kiselev, who unleashed the high bit-rate hack for the GH1 over a year ago. Early GH2 users are reporting success with the available high bit-rates in both 1080 24p as well as 720p60. Stability seems very good.

Sounds cool, but I don't see a compelling reason to try it out. The GH2 looks very good as-is. Now if the hack gave it a global shutter, that would be something...

Just an FYI for the benefit of those who might not be familiar with Vitaliy Kiselev's GH2 firmware hack: Refer to his website for more information:
http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/414/ptool-3.61d-topic

Instructions on how to obtain & install his software, and user reports (good & bad) are at the above link.

I'm waiting at least a few days before installing the hack on my GH2, to see if there are any major problems or not. YMMV.

Cheers.

does the hack fix the HDMI output issue as well ?
because a GH2 with outboard recorder would be killer

Don't know yet, but speaking of on-board recorders, this new one popped up today in a B&H email. Very interesting, indeed!

Not a wise buy right now ...

incompatibility issues with HDMI port a major factor ..... although they are working on it. abd for a device of this nature it built kinda weird. No mounting options ..... NONE, Zip , no screw holes on the unit ,no optional mounting bracket nothing...not even a magic unicorn to hold it while u shoot. Kinda weird. seems it was not well thought out.

If you need something like that now you are better off getting a ninja or Sound devices pix or AJA ki pro mini or nanoflash.

Sorry, but is Nigel saying the hdmi port doesn't work for simple monitoring on set or for external recording off the hdmi port with the hack? Thanks for clarifying.

The HDMI output works great for monitoring. You can turn all screen overlays off. In addition, there is a long thread on another forum describing how to process the files captured from this port with additional software. The jury is still out on that one, though. The common thought throughout the GH2 user community is - if the high bitrate hack ends up producing an even better picture quality and is also stable, do most users really even want to capture uncompressed from the HDMI port. Of course, if the hack does end up allowing for full uncompressed 1080p with no problems, then...

Yes i meant for recording the output of the HDMI.
As the guys here said monitoring works just fine, sorry id prefer to have an outboard recorder with prores/dnx/uncompressed

just my preference. if i cant have it well so be it but id try to get it

I am in the process of purchasing a gh2. This hdmi thing has increased my eagerness to purchase.(Temporarly not avilable from BH)

You are saying that I can record from the hdmi signal but not with the blackmagic device, am I correct?

So if I record with a nano or ninja what bit rate and resolution will I get?

Thanks
Richard

p.s
Do you think that their could be another firmware that would disable this hidden feature like they disabled the follow focus?
