Is it possible to offload cards to hard drive minus a PC?
on Apr 22, 2011 at 3:49:36 pm

Is there any way to backup Compact Flash and/or SD cards to a hard drive without the use of a laptop in the field? Is there any device available that acts as both a card reader and external storage device?

Thanks!

Yes, B&H sells a variety of devices for photographers to offload data from cards. Search under "stand alone data storage" you will find a variety of products. Price your cards before buying, unless you get a "large" HD model, it may be cheaper to buy cards instead.

Yes, there are external drives that you can use to directly. I haven't used any, so you'll have to google it. Some even have preview windows.

Wow! There are quite a few different options between the Jobo, Wolverine and Nexto Di brands of devices. And I can see where your suggestion of just buying extra cards may be the better option considering the prices of some of these. There is a Digital Foci Photo Safe II 250gb storage unit that is going for a mere $99 that has had quite a few reviews, but I don't think I'd want to put my faith in something so cheap. Prices overall seem to range between just a few hundred dollars to $2799 for field units.

Thanks for the info, guys!

Definitely use the NextoDI (NVS2525). I used it while doing a travel TV/Documentary shoot with lots of footage, and it was extremely reliable. And you can use it with multiple cameras and types of P2 and SD cards, as well as hard drives.
