Looking for a great field monitor.
on Oct 15, 2010 at 11:33:38 pm

Hi All,

I am looking for a great monitor for use with both my EX1 and my 7D out in the field.
I need both inputs - HD/SDI (EX1) and HDMI (7D), a true HD monitor (720)
I have looked at the Small HD http://www.smallhd.com/Products/DP6.html and it has both inputs available but it is only a 5.6" monitor and I would like to have at least a 7" inch.
The "no brainer" field monitor is the Flanders LM-0750W http://www.shopfsi.com/FSI_7_inch_hd_broadcast_monitor_p/lm-0750w.htm which has everything EXCEPT HDMI inputs.

Has anyone here seen or used the Manhattan monitors?
http://www.manhattanlcd.com/product_p/7011.htm

It seems to have everything I need, HD/SDI and HDMI inputs, it is 8.9" and has 1280x768 resolution, plenty of power options... but is it a great monitor?

Am I missing any great options out there?

Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for your input.

Marshal makes a good field monitor with Anton Bauer battery mount.

Hi Errol, Thanks for posting. I have never been impressed with Marshall Monitors. The main reason being, that I cannot seem to find a 7" Marshall that has HD resolution... they are all 800x480. But I may have found my answer... see my next post!

Thanks!

SOLUTION!

While looking again at the Flanders site, I found that they sell a Mini-HDMI to DVI cable to connect the 7D directly to the LM-0750W through the DVI Port. Brilliant! (no power supplies for an HDMI to HD/SDI converter!)I had not considered a DVI conversion but this seems to be the answer. And I still get HD/SDI for my other cams. Very nice. Anyone see a problem with this?

Thanks FSI!

Richard,
If you end up getting the FSI I'd love to hear what you think of it. I've had my eye on it for a while buy can't find any reviews.

Richard, did you end up going with the Flanders and the DVI -HDMI cable? would like to hear what you think. Also, Marshall makes a monitor (the V-LCD651stx-HDMI-PM) that is 1024x768 but it's only 6.5"
isn't the Flanders 800x480?
Anyway, I would like to hear what you got or what others are using as I'm looking for a good monitor for my 5D.

Thanks.

I will checkout this monitor as well. I have heard though that the 5d doesn't output hd 1920x1080 out from the hdmi port. Is this true?

How is the Flanders monitor in bright sunshine? Any ideas about a good outdoor portable hd monitor?

I use the 7" TV Logic with the DVI input and it looks the best I have seen of all the monitors we tested.Had a friend who just bought 2 Marshalls and returned them when we put them alongside the TV Logic. He then bought 2 TV Logics. This monitor seems to be the best for focus pulling the 5D even at the 480 res .Curios to see if the Small HD DP6 stacks up against the TV logic as I think its smaller size is more practical for some situations especially with its custom zoom for 5D and retaining the 1080 or 720 size.

Hi Mike,
I bought the 7" TV Logic and I'd like to use it with my 7D throught the DVI conector. I've tried with couple of HDMI-DVI adaptors but with not cluk... still not picture on the screen. Could you please, advise me in the adaptors that you use to conect with your 5D?
Thanks!
Charlie

Hi Charlie. It should be fine.I have a mini HDMI from camera to HDMI with DVI connector to go into monitor DVI port.Select DVI on front panel and hit Live View on 5D and presto you have pics.Hit info button on 5D twice and it resizes the image and hides the info.I have not used the TV Logic with a 7D so I cant be sure of your problem but it works fine with 5D MK2.DP6 small HD is a great monitor as well.Nice to have both.

Hi Mike,
Thanks a lot for your help. I actually bought a new HDMI to DVI-I adaptor and it does work now (although there is no WFM or Vectorscope on the DVI input). The adaptor that I had before it was jus DVI (qithout the I)... The DP6 looks great, and I'd love to have a backup, but have enough toys already and not budget for it.
Thanks for the advise!

Interesting. Is the image you're getting HD?

The monitor says the video signal is 1920x1080.. 60i (Although the 7D is on PAL mode 50fps) the picture has got a very good quality (I would say it's HD) but it doesn't cover the whole screen sidewise at any point -(even after pressing the info button)... maybe, because it's showing the safety black bars on top and botton of the 16:9 video mode, I suppose...??

Thank you Charlie for posting back, that's good to know. I may try some different adapters and see if I have better luck.

SmallHD has a very interesting video and text explanation of how to improve monitoring with the DP6. It's worth checking out.

I have a 7D and the TV Logic, and tried using it with the DVI adapter. I get an image but it's very crappy low res. Maybe there's a menu setting in there that's wrong but I don't think so. I'm intrigued that others are having success with this monitor with Canons. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Thank you all for the great input. It is most appreciated. As of now I have temporarily put on hold ordering the field monitor as we just added a second edit suite to the studio. We are going into our heavy post production season and my needs were greater for this than a field monitor. But I will be making the decision soon and placing my order and will let you all know what I end up with and give some feedback when it arrives.

Thanks again!

I read somewhere that the TVLogic and DP6 share the same LCD, it was on the internet so it must be true...
The ability to convert HDMI to SDI makes me lean toward the TV Logic. I compared the Swit S-1071F (aka JVC DT-X71F ), SmallHD DP6, IkanVX7e, TVLogic VFM-056WP, Atomos Samurai for my needs over here: http://www.digitalbuilt.com/?p=169
