Canon eos 550D PAL 1080 P Framerate?
on Oct 11, 2010 at 11:25:13 am

We are starting to shoot a film that will be presented in 1080P PAL.
What frame rate should I use for exposure, since there is no setting for 25 fps in the e0s menue? Canon helpdesk claims that if we use 50fps then the resulution will be scalaed down by the camera to 750P, even if thes setting is 1080P?

According to the manul the camera should be set on 25 fps or 50fps when shooting for presentation in PAL?

I'm not sure if I got your question right, but in the "movie menu" you can set your 550D to either 1920x1080p with 25fps or to 1920x1080p with 24fps, when set to PAL. If you want to shoot 50p, the 550D can only provide 1280x720P (that's maybe what you mean by 750p).

So, when set to PAL, your camera will give you either 25p or 24p in 1080 and nothing else...

The 50p mode is (to my knowledge) only needed, when shooting high quality slomos.

Hope this helps a bit!

My question was about shutterspeed when shooting PAL.

I guess if if you choose PAL the framer rate will always be 25fps?

In this option ther are lot of possible shutter speed settings, ranging from 1/30, 1/40, 1/10, 1/60, 1/18, 1/100...to 1/2500 and 1/3000. Does it matter wich shutter spedd is used when shooting PAL 25 fps?

I have med som test shoots in PAL with diffrent shutterspeeds in PAL and edited them in PAL. In Finalcut pro.

I canot see any diffrence in PAL shoots in different shutterspeed? They all play well? Or is there a standard also for the shutterspeed settingwhen shooting 25 fps PAL?

Oh, I see!

Well, it depends on, what you're shooting...
When working "cinematic" the standard for 25p would be 50fps.

When going higher, you will lose the typical motion blur, so you'll get some kind of strobo effect, because every frame and every phase of motion is sharp. That can be - of course - a wanted effect (best known example: "James Ryan").

When going to 40 or even 30 fps, all motion will become smoother.

Do some test shoots, render them out in your final output medium. Then decide what you (or your client?) likes and shoot with that framerate.

Shutter speed is more or less a creative and only to a small degree (i.e. matching flickering lights, tv etc... or the sheer need of more or fewer light) a technical decision.

Technically you can shoot in any framerate you want, but maybe you don't like the outcome ;-)

Hope this helps

Thanks, this was the information I was looking for.

Do you happen to know if ther a video samples on the internet with examples of footage with different shutterspeed?

Glad, if could help you!

Did a quick search on youtube and found that

Just look for "different shutter speed" or "shutter speed test" or something like that.

If you set the play back to PAL you will see the PAL frame rates.

In the menu settings go to the 2nd yellow spanner icon on the top and select video system, when you select PAL go back to the video menu and you will see the 25fps.
