AVCHD converter suggestions?
on Feb 4, 2010 at 2:42:30 am

Hello dear colleagues!
I just purchased a GH1, my first exploration in the HD field, being a Sony VX2100 user.
I am delighted to see the footage on my TV, (the only means to see it other than the camera's screen).
Also I am a FCP user in a G5, not an Intel, so I am still using the "old" FCP 6.0.6.
I have explored a few programs to convert the resulting MTS files to .mov, some of them good, some of them crash all the time.
I want to start editing the files from the GH1.
Any suggestions on what program to use to bring the AVCHD files converted to .mov?
I must add that with the demo programs I have been able to edit on FCP, but I am not sure what to choose.
Please, help!
Thank you.
By the way, I am in an idle moment work wise, so I have the time to continue my saga and find the right conversion program.

what programs have you tried? which ones crash?

i've never shot with the GH1, but if it's making MTS files, you should be able to use MPEG Streamclip. i would suggest converting to ProRes. let me know if it does or doesn't work.

Hello,
thank you for your input.
I tried your suggestion, but to my dismay, it doesn't work.
It gives me an error, that says:
"File open error: unrecognized file type"

Then it gives me option to Open anyway or OK

Thank you!

I forget to mention that I have used:
MTS Converter
Video Pier
ISkySoft

The best result was with Video pier, but crashes
Second in quality was ISkysoft, not perfect but no crashes
Third MTS Converter, not very good and slow to convert.

Thank you!

If you have FCP 6 or higher you should be able to open these files with the Log & Transfer tool. Otherwise maybe you should buy Cineforms Neoscene. I work with the GH1. Works like a charm

Thank you Itamar.
I am now to pick your brains:
Using the log&trans tool, do I connect the camera to the USB and ingest from there?
Is it possible for you to guide me in the process?
Thank you in advance for your time!

Update:
I just tried to ingest the MTS files using the log&transf tool and when the camera is connected, I get a message saying that the AVCHD media is unsupported on PowerPC base hardware.
I am on a G5, not intel.
I will explore your other option.
Thanks

Yes, you can connect the camera to your computer. You can also copy the whole 'PRIVATE' folder to your hard drive. When you open the L&T window, it will automatically open the AVCHD files.
I can guide you through the process, if you want to.
You can mail me at: info@koolendeanderen.nl

I use Toast to convert the AVCHD files from my PAL GH1. Works really well, fast with good quality and unlike Log & Transfer or Cineform NeoScene it can output to any Quicktime codec installed on the system. However for those with a NTSC GH1 it can't remove the pulldown from the 1080 24 fps in 60i stream so that has to be done in a secondary step.

Hello Martti,
Thank you for your response.
I would like to try TOAST as well.
I am in a G5, not intel.
I have TOAST.
would it be too much to ask you to guide me through the process?
I am willing to learn, since I have not been able to ingest the files from my GH1 other than demo programs, marred with limitations and flaws.
I thank you in advance!

Roxio, the maker or Toast, have a video explanation here:

http://img.roxio.com/enu/flash/toast10/toast10-convert.html

You can find it here 'Converting Video' in case the link above doesn't work.

http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html

Guess it's worth mentioning that Roxio's app 'Popcorn' is basically just the video converter from Toast.

Dear colleagues,
It worked, TOAST converted the video files from the GH1 into .mov and even DV files ready for FCP.
Thank you!
