I need to reformat a SD card because it went bad. Do you format it just like you would format a hard drive? Do you format it to FAT16?

Advice - do it in-camera. That way you can't do the wrong thing...

If it "went bad," throw it out.

If you want to test it first, I recommend doing a zero-wipe format in Disk Utility, then reformatting it in your camera. If your card is iffy, the zero-wipe will throw an error. And then you throw the card out.

The card should always be formatted in the camera. There is a low level format option also.

When I put the card into my T2i the camera will not turn on. When I put it into a card reader on my Mac I can see everything on it. So I can't format it in the camera but I can on the computer.

FAT16 is not usable for your camera, but you can try to format the card with your computer and then try it again with your camera. If the camera recognizes the card, re-format it with the low-level-format option. If not... well... the card my be damaged and you can throw it away
