Shooting with Canon 7D Manual mode
on Aug 26, 2010 at 5:27:39 am

Shot an interview with the house fluorescents on and my arri lights for a green screen set up. We switched to 1280 x720 @ 60 frames. What we had when we finished were yellow bands about an inch apart that visible o all the clips. Have been shooting for about a month now, this is a new one and I have read the book. Could this be an issue with fluorescent light s and shutter speed?

Greenscreen and house fluorescents would never be a good idea, you have to shut those things off on any shoot but especially greenscreen. Don't know if it is the cause of the yellow bands, you should post a still frame. Also you have to be testing your greenscreen footage out before you really get into the shoot. I don't shoot that much but I know that if it is not well lit and the correct exposure you are in trouble.

Also these cameras are not the best of greenscreen, too much compression, too little color space. They are also not know for great down scaling to 720p, all this may have added up to what you are seeing.

Another reason to use Neoscene conversion for green screen, as the conversion doubles the color space to 4.2.2

I think it is shutter speed related what you are seeing. I had visible banding with some Christmas lights, I could see it on the LCD of the 7D, so I just dialed down the shutter speed until it stopped.

I think this video tutorial might prove very useful to you since it talks about yellow banding and how to correct it in post:

This due to the fluorescents that cycle at 60 cycles per second (50 in PAL countries).

You need to set your shutter speed (not frame rate) to synchronize with this. You can't do that with 720 60p because the shutter speed will not slow down to 1/60.

Shoot 1080 30p or 24p with a shutter speed of 1/60.
